Guard on Duty

As my family and I persevere Irene in the comfort of a dry, powered (knock wood) home, my wife insisted that I share the following point. While we sit warm and dry and provisioned, there is an honor guard on duty tonight at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery.

There has been an honor guard in place every second of every day since 1948, regardless of conditions. The full story from WTOP is here.

Thank you for your service.

He'll be fine. The storm will reliably scare away most spectators, so he'll be performing for a non-existent audience which will probably help his nerves. I respect the soldiers who are stationed north of me at Ft. Wainwright who can expect lows into the -30s and -40s during the winter. No doubt, some of them would trade Alaska blizzards for Atlantic hurricanes.

A friend once told me that soldiers tended not to talk about how bad they had had it in this battle or that mission because in the services there was always someone who had it worse. I have a family member who served three tours in Antarctica. The morale issues made for some very not-CoC compliant stories.

I appreciate all of their service.

They won't complain about their experiences to civilians (they realize its not in good taste), but they'll offer every detail of their ordeals to other soldiers.

He will always have an audience.  God and the souls of those he watches over will always be his audience.

May they rest in peace with honor.  May we remember to thank them daily.

Personally, I will always doff my hat and take my boots off the table in respect of the sacrifices of the soldiers and their loved ones.

Thank you, Sisyphus--we can't be too often reminded of their sacrifice.

We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.

God help me to always remember, and be grateful for such men (and women).
