Much as I admire Gov. Walker in Wisconsin, Ohio is coming up fast and strong. And I don't think it will matter if Dems bolt the state:

COLUMBUS — By one vote, a bitterly divided Ohio Senate approved a sweeping overhaul of the state’s 27-year-old collective bargaining law Wednesday.

Supporters including Gov. John Kasich praised Senate Bill 5 as a win for governments trying to balance budgets, while opponents said it is the beginning of the end for union protection of public worker pay, hours and safety.

John Kasich has been a hero of national fiscal conservativism since his time in the House.  The media likes to portray the Tea party as a new thing.  Kasich was a Tea Partier before the Tea Party.  Cometh the hour, cometh the man.  Good for him.

Some of the Republicans in the Ohio Senate voted no.  So there may yet be some doubt that it will pass the other house -- though the Republicans have a bigger majority there, I believe.

Will this spark talk of Kasich 2012?

Three cheers  of John Kasich and the Ohio Senate.  May the House be as courageous and wise.

Kasich 2012 might be premature, Stuart.  But we'll be seeing a lot of him in 2012, what with Ohio being a swing state and all.  Kasich is great on TV.  He comes across as a kind of "anti-obama".  Minimal charisma, dorky look, complete mastery of the facts, no affectation, and an air of competence.  Kasich provides a perfect contrast to the man in the White House.

Methinks the whole field of possible candidates will be altered by how the Midwest plays out on collective bargaining and state budgets.

Yes, Republicans have greater majority in the Ohio House.

So Bill.  Are you saying that Kasich could be a dark horse for 2012.  Will Ohio rise again as the natural home of Republican presidential candidates?

I have a former co-worker as a Facebook friend.  We served in the Corps together as light armored vehicle mechanics about 15 years ago.  About a week ago he left a status update showing his disdain for Ohio's SB 5 and urging a vote of NO on it.

This evening's Facebook status from him was this: "Sound familiar?.........'We must close union offices, confiscate their money and put their leaders in prison. We must reduce workers salaries and take away their right to strike.' ~Adolph Hitler, May 2, 1933"

Of course, Hitler was only doing that to stomp out the competition from his rivals, who in this case happened to be the Communist Party.  Interestingly enough, the communists were the only group capable of outdoing old Adolph when it came to mass murder.

Perhaps you should point out to your former co-worker that Hitler also went to the bathroom on occasion, then ask him how long he plans to "hold it".

Here's how I did respond to him via uploaded Facebook video.

When am I going to wake up??  Seems as though there are actually Republicans showing some backbone.  Can't really be happening.  Ahhh. The real test is still to come.  Will we get the next geriatric party guy as our 2012 presidential candidate?  Is Bob still available?  How about McCain?

So glad Kasich is getting some national love, because he deserves it.

Watching him up close, though, I think he's better as a VP option than at the top of the ticket. His hair-on-fire, frenetic, shoot-from-the-hip style is endearing, but in the top spot, it might come across as out of control (not to us, necessarily, but to those darn independents). Kasich 2012 is risky. Not impossible, but risky.

Keith, fwiw from here Pawlenty is quietly looking like a calm, cool, competent tortoise that could pull it off, especially if Daniels remains on the sidelines. President Pawlenty: It even rolls off the tongue.

In Ohio, the Senate is where the squishes are at. The House should pass the bill with little trouble - and would probably improve it but for the fact that the Senate GOP barely passed SB 5 as it is!

If I may post this link for the nth time, I've got a lot of info about this topic on my site: thathero.com/tag/government-unions/

Unfortunately, this may be sufficient to quash any higher aspirations John might have.  I'm already dreading the campaign commercials in 2014 featuring soundbites from that video.

I would rather have Kasich in Ohio for the time being.  It still one of the more business averse states around, and I'd rather vote for someone who tangibly turned around a state on hard times than to vote for someone who just busted a union.  Let's see Ohio's productivity increase before we decide that we want to crown this guy.

I think it's a little sad that we've become so dispirited that we're ready to stick the number 2012 after the name of every Republican who does something remotely competent.
