"Moderate Muslim" is so last week.

Gaffe-prone NY governor David Paterson has coined a couple of new classifications we might want to ponder: "mainland" Muslims and "almost Westernized" Muslims.

By "gaffe", you mean "cocaine"?

Mainland Muslim? Somehow Muslims who live on islands are prone to violence? "Almost Westernized" seems utterly racist, like "wog" (Western Oriented Gentleman, or Westernized Oriental).

Sigh. Well, at least he's not Cuomo. Or Bloomberg.

Wow..."mainland Muslims" is just too good to be true.

I guess that excludes the island of Manhattan.

Or perhaps he's contrasting with the seagoing Muslims, as in the Barbary Pirates and such. Sinbad perhaps?

Paterson is onto something. Let's face it, Muslims need re-branding. Gotta soften that image, smurf it up. Ditch the angry, howling, wild-eyed thing - it just doesn't poll well and it clashes with the "Religion of Peace" meme.

Just a few random suggestions, gratis

  • Turbans are too, um, "foreign". Replace with something fuzzy and animal-themed. (Cute animals - bunnies, hamsters, pandas...).
  • Recruit a "friendly face" to represent Islam. Richard Simmons, I understand, is available.
  • Avoid earth tones (too militaristic) and black. Think pastels - or, better yet, jewel tones.
  • Think about replacing the traditional call to prayer with something a little - cheery. Maybe "Put on a Happy Face".
  • And one last thing: those names. You know, Abdualla al Maliki al Shabazz?. Way too, um, inaccessible. Have everybody change their name to Jerry. Or Chad.

Paterson also referred to "hybrids," which is interesting. Maybe the "clash of civilizations" is really just some "Island of Dr. Moreau" experiment gone bad, where the beaker of "mainlands" splashed into the vile of "Wahhabis" and the whole concoction was sucked down by a "semi-western" and we got Muhammed Atta.

I'm actually gonna miss David Patterson a bit. He's like our own drugged-up, half-blind Vladimir Putin. Nothing would shock me less than to see him shooting at whales with a crossbow, from a dinghy.

Kenneth, I just laughed so hard that tea shot out my nose. The only thing funnier this entire month for me was watching Claire Berlinski try to locate her hotel room key. I know, it doesn't sound funny, you kinda had to be there. But this definitely made my night.

Why, thank you, Jonathan. Always nice to know someone appreciates my humble contributions.

Especially because no one seems to know how to use the freaking "Like" feature.

Pretty sure we know how to use it, Kenneth. But we're, like, conservatives. XOXO is not part of our repertoire. In public.

Isn't it curious that those most insisting that Islam means peace never say Muslim, it is always moderate and now mainland, almost westernized Muslim?

The quip about the "Like" feature is an inside joke between myself and the Busy System Administrator.

As for the XOXO thing - I presume you refer to a Bowdlerization I employed. I assumed that since that word is occasionally used by Contributors on the Ricochet podcast, it was deemed acceptable here.

Am I mistaken?

Kennedy is right. I only recently announced that I like Edmund Burke. Still reviewing Hayek and Bill Buckley, though at this point I can state without equivocation that it's likely I'll like them. Good conservatives never rush to judgment. No group hugs--definitely no Kumbaya.

I'm sorry. I just don't understand what you're saying. Kennedy is right about what?

Once you've delved into Burke, Hayek and Buckley, you're a gonner.

Mark my words, you'll soon be snatching morsels out of the mouths of poor children, like all the rest of us conservatives.

Thought XOXO was "hugs and kisses". Scracth that, reverse it. Unless the gf is trying to sell me bleach.

Ahhh...all is well, all is well.

I thought you were chastising me for my use of the word "freaking".

My mistake.

And to think that I was contemplating calling you a "blue nose".

Let's hug it out!
