Oh, Raquel!
I don't know about others around Ricochet, but when Raquel Welch speaks about men and sex, it gets my attention. And recently she complained about what internet porn is doing to the male libido, suggesting that we men can't handle the truth:
“I just imagine them sitting in front of their computers, completely annihilated. They haven’t done anything, they don’t have a job, they barely have ambition anymore,” said the 71-year-old actress. “And it makes for laziness and a not very good sex partner. Do they know how to negotiate something that isn’t pre-fab and injected directly into their brain?”
Unlike Rick Santorum, she's not running for office. Like Rick Santorum, she's on the record with some ... uh ... controversial remarks about contraception.

I don't know about other around Ricochet, but when Bill McGurn writes an opening sentence like this, it gets my attention.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
Well, she's exactly the right age to have seen the whole sexual revolution unfold. When she was young, girls could look forward to something better than just sex--to dating, leading to romance, leading to marriage, leading to family. A used condom will never call you "Mom."

Re: Oh, Raquel!
During WWII Bob Hope used to introduce dancer Patty Thomas to the GIs with the quip, "I'd just like you boys to see what you're fighting for!" In the 1960's Jo Raquel Tejada, aka Raquel Welch, filled that role in Viet Nam.
Under that famous cleavage beats a good heart.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
This is a symptom, not a cause. The cause is more lengthy than 200 words and more difficult to understand, even for a smart woman like Raquel. I don't know why a 71 year-old is concerned about getting a good sex partner.
To me, the parallel to porn for men is romance films and certain TV shows for women, which have generated unrealalistic expectations. These, combined with incredibly unfair and archaic laws have destroyed more families than any internet porn site.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
She's spot on on both points. She makes very good points about contraception and marriage and makes a much better spokesperson than Rick Santorum!
What she says about porn is particularly interesting. I've always been disgusted at the exploitation and objectification of women (and the general grossness of the whole thing, but let's not go there), but never looked at what it does to men. Very interesting. Is this something the men among us can address? Within the Ricochet Code?

Raquel Welch -- Bill, my oh my, just thinking about her makes me feel young again.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
The money quote from the link: "Seriously folks, if an ageing sex symbol like me starts waving the red flag of caution over how low moral standards have plummeted, you know its gotta be pretty bad." There is a post on the member feed about Santorum's opinion of porn which made me consider my own attitudes to it and I am conflicted. When I was of an age to become aware of sexuality the only access to porn I had was the lingerie section of the Sears Roebuck catelogue. That was a powerful influence but I don't know if the truly pornographic material available today has any more impact than those scrumptuous images did then. I really don't know.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
Women have been using sex to exploit men since before the wheel. Give me a break. Every last dollar in her bank account is due to millions of horny guys who all wanted to have sex with her. Now at 71 when she no longer has the bombshell looks and what does look good is all plastic, she's going to lament that men are becoming lazy and bad sex partners due to porn? If so, so what?

Re: Oh, Raquel!
Pornography has gone so mainstream that The Los Angeles Times recently lamented that California's penchant for regulating everything that moves is chasing the "adult" film business away.
"...(T)he Los Angeles City Council's proposed new regulation of the porn industry's safe-sex practices — a proposal that increases both regulation and costs in an economically important industry in the state.
"And SoCal porn producers know they don't need huge wardrobe containers to move to Nevada."

Re: Oh, Raquel!
Former sex symbol Raquel Welch is speaking out about the nature of pornography damaging society, the daughter of the previous Republican Presidential Candidate, Meghan McCain, is giving interviews to Playboy.
More than a little odd.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
I always read Playboy for the interviews. Oops,I mean I only read Playboy for the interviews. I don't know how to embed a link from an IPad but the Ace of Spades has a great analysis of Ms McCain's interview.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
Raquel comes through!
I rarely miss a chance to recommend Richard Lester's The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers (one movie split post production, so they say) and I won't miss my chance here. The movies show Raquel at her best, both regarding beauty and comic acting. Screenplay by George McDonald Fraser. Funny, touching, bracing.

Behold! I give you Raquel Welch!

That is one of the most bizarre things . . . I mean, WHO made that? I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist. Ever since Glenn Reynolds posted it a few years ago, I can't help but remember it anytime someone mentions Raquel Welch.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
I'm sorry, I just watched that video again and laughed so hard I cried.
Couldn't the Blue Yeti photoshop a screen scrape from the video and add James, Peter, and Rob's faces to the dancers for release of the next Ricochet podcast?

Re: Oh, Raquel!
Charles, Thank you for that link. If a Paul Ryan video is conservative porn, that link and the fact that you could find it, has to represent nerd porn.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
Raquel Welch was making the rare TV appearances last year, I can't recall what she was promoting. When one interviewer exclaimed over how terrific she looked (and she did), her response was something on the order of: "Thanks, it's a lot of work. But it's my job." She's still good at it.

I'm not certain analysis is the correct description, merciless seems closer to the mark.

Re: Oh, Raquel!
Agreed, Capt. Spaulding, she scrubs up well for a septuagenarian. I think I saw the same interview. It was on Fox and was about her conservative views. She's right about the dulling effect of porn. At one time, a still from 10,000 BC featuring Raquel in a fur bikini being chased by a dinosaur was exciting. Today men fast-forward through explicit sex looking for something interesting.
