Girl fight alert! It's Meghan McCain v. Laura Ingraham time--and I'm taking bets.

laura-mccain-300x237

Background: as you all know, Michele Bachmann delivered an unofficial GOP response to the president's SOTU. Watch it here. Then media pundits, being the petty little gremlins that they are, decided to focus their coverage of Bachmann's address on the direction her eyes were looking in as she delivered the speech, rather than the substance of what she was saying. "Crazy eyes" is how Gawker described Bachmann.

But one pundit, if we're going to call her that, took it further. Meghan McCain, with no small amount of sass, told Lawrence O'Donnell:

Bachmann, in my opinion, is no better than a poor man's Sarah Palin....CNN should be ashamed of themselves for airing this. It is one [indecipherable] woman who couldn't even look into the camera directly.

Now, Laura Ingraham, fiery as always, was not going to let that slide. Speaking on Fox News last night, she told Bill O'Reilly, "Meghan McCain: maybe she's a poor man's Ron Reagan." Zing!

This isn't the first time that Ingraham and McCain have sparred. After McCain wrote a column titled "My Beef With Ann Coulter" in May 2009, Ingraham slammed McCain, saying

Ok, Meghan. Do you think that anyone would be talking to you if you weren’t kind of cute and you weren’t the daughter of John McCain? Or do you just think that they would just think that you were just another Valley Girl gone awry?

Ingraham also made fun of McCain's weight, to which McCain responded by writing a column titled "Quit Talking About My Weight, Laura Ingraham."

Instead of intellectually debating our ideological differences about the future of the Republican Party, Ingraham resorted to making fun of my age and weight

What will come next in the Ingraham v. McCain saga? I don't know, but where's Ann Coulter when you need her?

I've begun to think that the worst thing about the McCain '08 Campaign is making Meghan a pseudo-celebrity. Aren't her 15 minutes up yet?

I just want to say for the record that in any girl fight my money is on Claire Berlinski, unless gunfire is involved in which case its on Andrea Ryan. I assume that JC Casteel will step in if it gets ugly, and Dave Carter can pull up in the big rig in the nick of time to whisk everyone away to safety.

I, of course, being a hands on manager will bring the single malt Scotch and recite one of Cicero's orations.

She's milking those 15 mins for all they're worth, that's for sure.

The hair, make up and lighting on Bachmann was a groaner and painful to watch but its a survivable mistake. The more serious issue was her attempting to co-opt the Tea Party banner which I don't think sits too well with a lot of tea partiers. The McCain thing is just a tempest in a teaparty pot, but who am I to criticize someone for being catty?

I think the Bachmann response got out of hand for the TPE.  Honestly, I thought they assumed that this would be a little podcast and then Republican pundits complained that it drew from Ryan and CNN decided to air the thing to try to bring about that prophecy.  It was never supposed to be on TV.

Can you really co-opt your own reason for getting into politics in the first place? I don't think so. Bachmann was giving the same speech six years ago, saying that the growth of state and federal spending (and future entitlements) was unsustainable. Was she right? Before Bachmann got into politics, she was a tax lawyer. She was Tea Party before there was a Tea Party.

Also, I think the Tea Party Express asked Bachmann to deliver the response

That's a fair point but I've seen a few comments on Ricochet that they like the Tea Party being leaderless. And I also realize that there's lots of RINOs in the party who would love to see the Tea Party turn on each other like a piranha going after a raw drumstick in the Amazon (forced metaphor intentional) but the response did come across as piling on.

Has anyone asked Senator McCain to comment?  He must be sooo proud to see his daughter get her rear kicked by Laura Ingraham.

If Meghan McCain wasn't loaded she wouldn't look like the the Paris Hilton of punditry, but she is, so she has the sheen on insularity or is that the matte ?

If she wasn't Meghan McCain, she'd be angling for a job at Wonkette.

The lefty media just waits for these chicks to show up and shine the klieg on them to see if they light up and then they check to see they're vacant, and then they put them on to try and embarrass .

Look at the humorless students at Washington University who won't let Bristol Palin speak on campus . If they could only see themselves being censorious fascists. Unfortunately, not a teachable moment with no real teachers in sight.

Ingraham v McCain is just not a fair fight.  But it will be fun to watch the "poor man's Sally Struthers" (HAHAHAHA!) get her comeupance.

I wasn't thrilled with TPE's attempt to assume the mantle of tea party authority, or Bachmann's nod to that authority.

On the other hand, being the target of Meghan McCain's scorn can only help Bachmann with tea partiers and conservatives in general.

I totally agree with Meghan McCain on this one.  The Tea Party has mass appeal because it is a leaderless, grassroots movement. Nevertheless, Bachmann clearly wants to become the spokeswoman of the movement by starting the House Tea Party Caucus and by delivering an official Tea Party response.  Did any of you see the interview she gave with MSNBC on election night?  While I'm not a fan of Chris Matthews, Bachmann looks like she is in a trance.  Can you imagine the SNL skits if she was nominated?  And I think that's an important point to consider, actually. When you look at how Britain caricatured Margaret Thatcher, they made her look rich and elitist, but they never made her look like a bumbling idiot. Conservatives are in denial that Bachmann and Palin just aren't good at interviews.

You're taking bets?  That's just bookmaking malpractice.  I don't care what the odds are.  Gimme Laura to win.  Scuse me, off to go mortgage my dog.  Be right back.
