October Surprise, Neighborhood Edition
I just received what has to be the meanest anti-candidate email I've ever seen. I'm on a list-serv for my Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria. A neighbor just emailed us about one of the many candidates who's running for City Council:
Before you vote for Alexandria City Council tomorrow, I wanted to share my story on [redacted] and why this guy is someone you should pass on for City Council.
My brief interaction with [redacted] at the Del Ray Dog Park is one I won't forget. I took my dog to the park one morning a few years ago. My dog was a large dog that was well socialized and interacted well with the other dogs. A smaller dog (not well socialized) bit my dog in the side causing him a painful wound. When I voiced my objection to the owner, [redacted] confronted me and went on a screaming tirade about me and my dog. Not sure why [redacted] felt like he needed to intervene as he wasn't involved and I had never met the guy before. Once [redacted] was through with his rant I was able to sort the issue out with owner of the other dog. No one asked [redacted] to get involved and he certainly didn't help resolve anything. In the end I wound up with a $500.00 vet bill from the dog bite and a strong conviction that I had met the biggest [redacted for Code of Conduct] in Del Ray.
Is it wrong that this made me laugh? Also, there's no way I'm voting for this guy now. See, negative campaigning works.

I'm guessing there might be another side to this story. Just a guess.

Or an organizational affiliation that the writer doesn't think is relevant.
Mollie, you call it "the meanest anti-candidate email" but you are doing what the neighbor wants anyway?

Why do I feel stories like this will dog us the rest of the year?
Does anyone else sense that the president eats up these dog stories?

Indeed. Also I've never met a dog owner who didn't think their dog was "well-socialized".

Re: October Surprise, Neighborhood Edition
As soon as I read or hear someone start their "dog park" story with a pronouncement that their dog is well socialized, everything that comes afterward is ignored. It's clear that the writer/speaker projects their personality onto their pet, and the quality of their views is subjective at best. When one cannot separate themselves from their canine or feline it is difficult to give their opinions value, as they are emotional thinkers rather than rational.
Off Topic: What a wealthy narcissistic society we are, that we create and maintain with taxpayer dollars parks for our dogs to roam around and "socialize". There's one in my city too. There is not enough baseball fields nor money for new ones, but the dog park always gets the grass mowed and the poo removed.

When I read the email, mouth agape, I thought, "Well at least no one ate a dog."

One of the candidates has proposed a Civilian Conservation Corps for the neighborhood.

If I knew and respected the email writer, I wouldn't vote for [redacted].

Sounds like one of Taranto's "Dog bites dog, now THAT would be news" bits.
