Beginning tomorrow, the Occupy Wall Street protesters will take to the highway to begin a two week march from New York City to Washington, DC.  The organizers plan to walk 20 miles per day in order to arrive at the nation's capital by November 23rd, the day the congressional deficit reduction super committee is slated to meet, so that they can "protest the Bush tax cuts that only benefit the top 1%."

On the one hand, it looks like the OWSers have made progress in zeroing in on one concrete demand: eliminate the Bush tax cuts.  But on the other, the methods the protesters are employing in pursuit of their demand have become increasingly ill-advised.

Diane:  Please remove the "roadkill" reference immediately.  It could be taken as an incitement to violence.

Possible substitute:  "Stinky, Lice-ridden People Alert."

Another possible strategy:  Rent a large tramp steamer, put it in Baltimore harbor, tell the OWS folks that the steamer has been occupied, invite them aboard--then take them to any one of several countries in the Middle East (Syria, Afghanistan, and Iran would be good candidates), North Korea, or, say, Burma.  In three months, come back and get them (assuming they'll be allowed to leave). Check out how bad they think America is after that experience.

The words "Bataan Death March" floated across my brain-pan as I read your words, Diane. I wonder how many of them have ever walked 20 miles, let alone 20 miles per day, day after day.

I don't see it, but if you do, that's reason enough to remove it.

With this scheme, the OWSers have stepped it up a notch and have become a hazard to themselves and motorists.  I sure hope Dave Carter doesn't have reason to be over on the Eastern seaboard the next two weeks.

I meant it ironically.  Leave it.  Just kidding.

Wait.  "Bush" tax cuts?  Didn't Obama extend them?  Doesn't that make them the "Obama Tax Cuts."  These people are so 2008.

It's almost like these people have a community organizer behind them, pushing his policies.

Btw, Denise, Mr Obama is nothing, if not persistent.

I can't tell you how many times I've thought about that.

One of the questions hanging around the 2008 Presidential election was "What, exactly, does a Community Organizer do?"

Just take a look at all the #Occupy nonsense. This is what a Community Organizer does. These sorts of stunts should have been expected.

I had similar thoughts.  20 miles a day for 2 weeks is nuts, even on paved roads.  I've walked 20+ miles in a day, sometimes for subsequent days, and it's exhausting.

My guess is that this will be the death knell of the OWS goodwill.  After half of the bums drop out the first day and 1% actually finish, it will be perfectly clear what a bunch of lazy, no-good layabouts they are.

These spoiled kids have no idea what they're in for.  I've done a twenty mile hike - once.  The next day, I was sore everywhere.  My feet were a mess, because I didn't have good footwear.  And I did it on a warm summer day.  They want to do this in November.

I think the attrition rate will probabaly be something like this:  After the first day, 80% of them will quit.  On the second day, 80% of the remainder will quit.  Etc.  Or, it'll all be phony and they'll actually get car rides to each destination.

The most likely outcome is that no one but the handful of organizers will actually do this.  It's one thing to occupy a city park  and throw a big party while pretending to care about the world, but it's quite another to embark on a truly difficult journey.

This reminds me of a conversation I overheard between two liberals this morning at my local San Francisco haunt.

First liberal: I thought he [Barack Obama] was a community organizer who cared about real people. Turns out he just wanted to get elected. It doesn't even matter who's president. I could care less.

Second liberal: I completely agree.

Wait. I am in the DC area. Traffic is already a nightmare here. Are you telling me that soon I will be a flood with unwashed statist in addition to the usual horrors or DMV traffic?

Don't think they won't pull the lever for him next November to keep the "wing-nuts" out of power, though.

I love it already. For this OWS has my full support. Something about gridlock along the NYC/Washington corridor has an intrinsic appeal as well.

I have to say that the thought of them attempting 20 miles per day for 2 weeks brought this to mind (link has a much bigger image):

I'll donate to the cause if it means they'll all be vacating every other city they've "occupied". Get all of 'em all in D.C. and out of our hair.
