Obarter
President Obama to Matt Lauer on TODAY:
"I don't sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar," the president added. "We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick."
Self-righteous, thin-skinned, wonkish, mean-spirited, hyper-sensitive to criticism, and, when the going gets tough, petulant. Remind anyone of anyone else?
"I'm gonna whup his ass" -- Jimmy Carter, 1980
It's astonishing, really. Obama has signalled in all sorts of ways that his ambition is to be a sort of Reagan of the Left -- transformative, significant -- not a trimmer like Clinton, and certainly not an epic failure like Carter. And yet for all the media fawning over Obama's supposed "intelligence," the guy just doesn't get it. Even leaving aside the rather large fact that most of Reagan's policies reflected the will of a majority of the public and Obama's do not, Reagan acted the role of a leader, while Obama continually alternates between junior professor and blatantly partisan politician -- just like Carter. The elephant in the room here just might be -- he's really not that smart.

Re: Obarter
Well, yes. Sharp elbows and a ruthless organization covered up by swooning pundits and a smooth public mask can win elections and hide the warts for a while, but at least half of the other declared candidates as of Jan. 1 2008 were smarter than TVG.

Re: Obarter
Steve, I was pondering the same point yesterday after I watched the video. I came to the same conclusion you did, that Obama might be pretty intelligent but he's not very smart. By that I mean, he might have adequate reasoning abilities, but he doesn't seem to know a lot of stuff and he lacks important experience. I think this manifests itself in strange ways, for example, how could be possibly have thought 10,000 people died in a tornado, and how could he not have known how to pronounce corpsman?
I also read about a study recently that found an inverse correlation between a person's actual intelligence and their self-ratings of their own intelligence. So people of low ability tended to overrate themselves because they didn't understand their limitations, while people of high ability were too modest. Which category do you think the President falls into?

Wow, Steve, I'm not sure you're allowed to say things like that. I once said it in a room containing an NYU law student, and was promptly labeled a racist for insinuating that our president might not be too smart. "Of course, he's brilliant," the NYU student assured me, "You have to be extremely intelligent to graduate from Harvard!"
