Obama to African Americans: Know Your Place
Politicians are known the world over for racing from one position over to another with blinding speed, but it is a rare bird indeed who can go from Hope to Petulance in such record time. In a speech to the annual Awards Dinner of the Congressional Black Caucus, President Hopey Changey's message to African Americans was the kind normally reserved for ill-mannered children. To a community whose unemployment rate stands at a 27-year high of 16.7% the President said, "Stop complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'. We are going to press on. We have work to do." Work to do? What work? He's stifled job creation with suffocating regulations and incessant threats of tax increases on job creators, and then admonishes people to get to work? "It gets folks discouraged. I know. I listen to some of y'all," he said. Well isn't that special? He actually listens to some of his constituents. How deferential! How magnanimous! How empathetic that from time to time he actually bends the royal ear toward "some of y'all." And, just in case his audience didn't understand how truly empathetic he is, he actually said, "Take off your bedroom slippers. Put on your marching shoes," adding, "The future rewards those who press on." Press on toward what? A 20% unemployment rate, Mr. President? Because that's the trend line of your policies.
Taking care, however, not to lose the common touch and to share his own sufferings with the gathering, the President added, "I don't have time to feel sorry for myself. I don't have time to complain. I'm going to press on." How's that for a disarming touch of honesty? Of course there's no time left to feel sorry for oneself when there are so many holes of golf left unplayed, so many hoops left untouched, so many His and Her's jet trips to Martha's Vineyard to make, and who knows how many more vacation days to be packed into His Majest…er, I mean the President's schedule.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters labeled the President's speech, "a bit curious," adding that he didn't use such blunt language when speaking to other minority groups. In reality, there's nothing curious about it, though there is much that is appalling. "Stop complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'," translates simply into "Get back on the liberal plantation where you belong. Know your place."

In fairness, I wasn't aware that Ricochet Member Stuart Creque had already covered this subject with this post. I read Obama's remarks before embarking on a late night drive last night, and became increasingly agitated the more I thought about it. So upon waking today, I wrote my own post and neglected to check if anyone else had covered the subject. My apologies to Stuart, who captured the sentiments perfectly.

They add popular words and make changes to the dictionary from time to time so now they can have, under Condescension; See Obama.
SNL did a bit this weekend that lampooned Rick Perry and wether he could go more than 10 seconds without alienating his base.
The president could be painted with that very same brush.

I'm not going to get all over him for a small gaff like this...but mixing up Jews and Janitors? Didn't he really mean to mix up Jews with Billionaires?

But of course, if one of the folks on our side made that kind of mistake, or referenced an "intercontinental railroad," they would be labeled unsuited for public office by 90 percent of the media and half of our own side.

I will give the President a pass on this one because in listening carefully to the clip, it seems to me that he was starting to say a word that began with a syllable "jut-" or "jud-" and corrected himself. There seems to be a consonant after the long u sound.
Of course, what the word he originally tried to say might have been is open to speculation. I don't know many English words that would fit: "Jute-sellers"? "Judiciary members"?

True Dave, but your title conveys exactly what I've been thinking. Will the CBC, and the black community in general, ever realize how cheaply they've sold themselves, how many times they've willingly played the fool (I always think of Tom Sowell perpetually rolling his eyes at these shenanigans).

Well, if a skyrocketing unemployment rate and a President who bluntly tells you to stop complaining about it doesn't serve as a wake-up call, I'm not sure what would.

My favorite part of the speech was the end: after invoking God's blessings on the crowd and America, he thumped the side of the podium as he walked away. He had his Chris Rock vibe working, and since he couldn't just drop the mic and walk off, he did the best he could.

He's not exactly a "genuine" African-American like Herman Cain, but he does play one on TV. In front of the correct audience, that is.

Well, Mezzrow, I'm not particularly concerned with ethnic percentages and what makes one a "genuine" representative of any race. I've got an unholy alliance of Irish, Scotch Irish, Spanish, and Cajun French myself. President Obama is, however, a "genuine" and undisputed economic disaster. To compound such a shoddy performance as President with admonishments to the people who have suffered the most under his stewardship to "stop complainin'." is beyond tone-deaf. It is small. It is petulant. It is, or ought to be, embarrassing for anyone who voted for him.

Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part, but I get the feeling his shtick isn't working. These people aren't stupid; they know they are getting played. I don't expect anyone to publicly attack Obama, but I suspect there are going to a lot of black voters staying at home next November.

I think you have put it well in your response. This kind of behavior would be deeply embarrassing to a man who is self-aware in any manner that we would understand. What Barack Obama does is not governance, it is theatre. The changes that will grind us for decades happen deep within a 500 page document, with the assistance of a cadre of leftist bureaucrats and sympathetic judges. This man is just something to look at and listen to while the busy hands of government are freed to make us "better" humans and agglomerate more power to the state.
