Nothing says happy new year's like new taxes--that is, if you're the Obama administration.

Come January 1st, three of Obamacare's 19 tax hikes will take effect, as Alex Cortes, writing in The Daily Caller, informs us.

Affecting nearly every American is the law’s excise tax  on brand-name drug manufacturers, which any honest person will readily admit is largely a tax on consumers as companies have little choice but to pass on this new cost in the form of higher drug prices....

The second area of new Obamacare taxation is targeted toward consumer-driven insurance plans such as health savings accounts (HSAs), flexible spending accounts (FSAs), and health reimbursement accounts (HRAs)....

As of January 1st the law forbids Americans from using these plans to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter drugs. Now enrollees will have to purchase them out of pocket, effectively imposing yet another unnecessary tax on struggling Americans

As Bing Crosby once said,

If you're worried and you can't sleep
Just count your taxes, instead of sheep
And you'll fall asleep counting your taxes...

I think that's how the song goes, anyway.

Since all of the communists who run my PhD program don't provide health insurance for my wife and daughter (ironically), I'm forced to pay for it out of pocket.  So, we are enrolled in a high deductible plan which enables us to enroll in an HSA account.  For conservatives, these plans should be very promising.  As Mark Steyn says, HSA plans return the doctor patient relationship closer to a normal provider/consumer interaction.

The issue with health care "reform," as I see it, is control.  HSA's provide for more responsibility and savings by the consumer.  Thus, they don't play into the hands of government stooges, because they allow for much less control.  If the government wanted to insure the extra "uncovered" persons in the US, they could've bought individual plans for every citizen - which would've cost less money than what they ended up doing.  Their aim though, is not to insure "the children" but to increase control.  HSA's stand in the way of control and thus they must be phased out.
