Obama's Approval Rating: 91% Among Blacks, 36% Among Whites
A new poll out by Gallup this morning spells more bad news for Obama and the Democrats. Among blacks, Gallup found that Obama's approval rating was 91%. Among whites, it's only 36%. The Dems are clearly worried about black turnout for the midterms. They've launched a 2 million dollar outreach campaign targeted at urban and African American communities. Yet, only 25% of blacks have given thought to the election.
The president's general approval rating was at 45% which, as the LA Times points out, is not high enough to withstand significant losses in November:
Presidents with approval ratings below 50% at midterm time see their party suffer substantial losses in its congressional membership, regardless of how much explaining and blaming the president attempts in the campaign leading up to what becomes, in effect, a referendum on the president.
And since Democrats currently hold substantial majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives, they have substantially more seats to lose. A switch of 39 House and 10 Senate seats would give control of both houses to the Republicans for the first time since they lost it in 2007 after 12 years of GOP majorities.

What's striking to me about this effort is how condescending it is. One radio ad played in an NPR story:
"There is an important election in November and it is called the midterm. Republicans are trying to take over and we have to stop them."
I guess effective is effective but I was really struck by how ready the DNC was to dumb down the discussion. I was trying to imagine the equivalent redneck ad for the RNC -- and more importantly the outrage it would inspire among the MSM.

One of America's greatest disappointments is the color obsession blacks continue to feed. Martin Luther King would be horribly disappointed.
I was present in Natchez Mississippi ten years ago for the celebration of MLK Day, and the whole city turned out for a parade of the city leaders, police, fire, et al. They were 95% black.
They've won the Civil Rights battle in many places, and have their president. It will never be enough to satiate the tribal instinct, apparently. As long as they persist in keeping OJ, Maxine Waters, Charlie Rangel, and Obama in spite of all evidence of corruption and ineptitude, there will be hell to pay.

That is condescending!
This part of the NPR story stood out to me:
I think something like this may be the reaction among young voters in general (regardless of race, I think). I just visited Dartmouth and the students are totally disengaged from politics. Compared to two years ago, when we had movie stars come to campaign on campus for Obama--and Obama volunteers trying to register you to vote every where you turned--the political energy this time around has disappeared.

What's scary is the dependency factor. Since black unemployment is 16.3% (compared to 8.6 among whites) and among youths it's 45.1%. it shows that the two groups hurting the most still blindly put their faith in government and redistribution. I forecast many more years of animosity ahead.

I think identity politics and the "social safety net"--both of which are byproducts of left thinking--are the real villains here. Get rid of them, and I think you get rid of whatever divisions remain among whites and blacks in this country.
A good friend of mine works for Teach for America in NYC. Her students are mostly black or Latino. Her fellow teachers are 99% black.
She was in the office of the school's assistant principle last week and she saw three posters hanging on his wall: One of MLK Jr, one of Malcolm X, and one of a black man with his fist in the air, milk pouring down his face, and the words STAY BLACK emblazoned at the bottom.

In 2002, Condoleezza Rice's approval rating among blacks was 41% (but 40% of respondents didn't know who she was). Am looking for numbers on Colin Powell but can't find any.

I'd rather get rid of the social safety net than identity politics. Identity politics are annoying and sophomoric, but the social safety net is actually oppressing those who it is meant to serve. If you get rid of the social safety net, not only would you make some real impact, it would cause identity politics to dissolve its way out of the political scene.
Kennedy Smith: Get rid of identity politics, young editrix? Who knew it was that easy? Probably easier to get rid of the social safety net.

It's probably more a measure of pro-socialist political views than racism. It's like the Soviet Russian truism about an unproductive farmer, with a old mule, that lives next to a productive farmer with a big young draft horse. Someone notices that the unproductive farmer is unhappy, and they ask him, "what can be done to cheer you up, anything...?" And the unproductive farmer says, "poison that horse that lives next door."
