Ricochet friend and favorite Democrat Mickey Kaus saw this article in Politico, about Obama's recent visit to Detroit, in which he touted the "success" of the auto bailouts. The president told the assembled group that

"If some folks had their way, none of this would be happening,” Obama said, as Chrysler workers booed his reference to Republicans who voted against the bailout. “Just want to point that out. Right? This plant and your jobs might not exist. There were leaders of the ‘just say no’ crowd in Washington. They were saying, 'Oh, standing by the auto industry would guarantee failure.' One of them called it ‘the worst investment you could possibly make.’"

Mickey then Tweeted: Obama's auto bailout celebrations have a "Mission Accomplished" feel, no?
Right again, Mickey.

Great! now we have citezens with little or no money to fall back on paying taxes to support inflated UAW pension plans and idle worker programs that run labor costs in UAW plants to $72 per hour while the Japanese manufacturers are paying $42 per hour and their workers are taking home more money. Ah! the sweet smell of success. Wait, I think I can feel my leg tingling.

Right indeed, Mickey. As I note, we've seen this movie before.

One thing that has always bothered me about the "Mission Accomplished" banner was that it was in fact specific to the USS Abraham Lincoln, not the entire Iraq Operation. It was actually put up by the Naval Operations officers as a tribute to the crew of CVN 72 for accomplishing the mission they were dispatched to do.

However, W. put his foot in his mouth by making the "End of Combat Operations" speech standing in front of it thus making it appear to be about the whole kit and kabootal.

That said, here we have a president making a more striking statement. Keeping a business open, or people working when the government throws money at them is not a sign of success, we won't know if this is successful for 5 to 10 years. Then we'll know if the nay sayers were right or not.

Nothing makes me want to buy a German car like President Obama holding a UAW pep rally!

But, maybe we're being too hard on the President: a "Mission Accomplished" tone would apply perfectly well as a reference to all the money the UAW has poured into Democrats' campaigns in the past decade.

If anyone could finish accomplishing Gov. Granholm's mission in Michigan, it's President Obama. Six more years and we may drop to 3 percent unemployment. Of course, 50% of adults will have dropped out of the labor force entirely, but whacha gonna do? If making Michigan the green-tech, labor-friendly, movie capital of the midwest won't help, nothing will.
