During the 2008 election, then-Senator Barack Obama scored political points off Senator John McCain after the latter said the fundamentals of the economy were strong. Now President Obama has returned the favor. In a press conference at the White House this morning, President Obama said, "The private sector is doing fine."

Remember those words. In the months ahead, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney should not let American workers forget that Obama said them.

There the "private sector" of lobbying firms, law firms and government contractors is doing pretty well. If you work for one of them, you're probably doing pretty well, too.

I hope Gov. Romney makes a powerful conservative case - more than a 59 point plan to slow the growth of gov't -  about why the opportunity for the private sector will do better with him in office. He as the credibility to do so.

Wow.  He's in a hole and cannot seem to quit digging.  That's a precious sound bite Romney could use endlessly.  I'm starting to believe that Obama wants to lose.

Romney ad:

Obama clip:  "The private sector is doing just fine."

Type on screen with scary music:  8.2% unemployment

Obama clip: "The private sector is doing just fine."

Type on screen:  30 million Americans currently using food stamps

This could go on and on.......

Call it farfetched, but I just can't stop a certain image of Stalin from haunting my mind.  He is standing stiff at the podium; all tightly controlled, neat and prim in his uniform; declaiming to an applauding throng of apparatchiks:

"The kulaks are doing just fine."

Hey give him a break, guys. He's been a little out of touch with Joe the Plumber lately and he's been in New York and Hollywood. Obama stopped listening to Joe when he discovered he only made $40,000 a year, wasn't really a licenced plumber anyway and owed back taxes -what a loser!

Cher is doing fine Jon Bon Jovi is still selling records. Glee and Les Monves are raking in cash. Sarah Jessica Parker still gets checks for Sex and the City reruns. Next question.

I am trying to understand his argument.  He is claiming that cuts at the state and local levels are what is causing the problems.  The problem is that 1) many state and local governments were having real financial problems, 2) the evidence is not all that clear that state and local governments have engaged in any meaningful austerity ( see below), and 3)  He is basically arguing that the Feds should print and borrow the money and then give the money to the states. How is that "fair" to the states who have managed their finances responsibly?

From Don Boudreaux:

It’s true that such projected spending for 2012 will be down by just under five percent from its 2009 level, but this statistic is largely an artifact of the huge – nearly 11 percent in a single year – spike in such spending that occurred in 2009 over 2008.  Compared to the average of such annual spending for the ten-year period 2003-2012, spending in 2012 is higher by 5.6 percent.  More significantly, compared to the average of such annual spending for the decade leading up to the downturn (1999-2008), such spending in 2012 is higher by 17 percent.*

The faint sound you just heard was a screamed "Noooooooo" emanating from the west wing of the white house.

This looks like a jump the shark, Jimmy Carter attacked by a killer rabbit, Dukakis in a pith helmet moment to me.  Why Drudge doesn't have a big picture of O with his quote underneath him right now, I don't know.

I dearly hope that every FOX news show leads with this quote and also the question of the leaks and the danger to national security they represent.
