He tells Democratic lawmakers that if they don't pass his tax deal, it's all over for his presidency.  From The Hill:

Obama is telling members of Congress that failure to pass the tax-cut legislation could result in the end of his presidency, Rep. Peter DeFazio (Ore.) said.

"The White House is putting on tremendous pressure, making phone calls, the president is making phone calls saying this is the end of his presidency if he doesn't get this bad deal," he told CNN's Eliot Spitzer.

And then he denies it:

"The president hasn’t said anything remotely like that and has never spoken with Mr. DeFazio about the issue," said White House spokesman Tommy Vietor.

The way this administration is going, both things are probably true.  The Obama administration is cracking up.  And it's like that old saying: the fish cracks up from the head down.

What we're going to be seeing, I think, from our tightly-wound-and-now-unwinding president, is what shrinks call projection:

...a psychological defense mechanism where a person unconsciously denies their own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, such as to the weather, or to other people. Thus, it involves imagining or projecting that others have those feelings.[1]

Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

An example of this behavior might be blaming another for self failure. The mind may avoid the discomfort of consciously admitting personal faults by keeping those feelings unconscious, and redirect their libidinal satisfaction by attaching, or "projecting," those same faults onto another.

Prepare yourself for this whining, self-justifying litany from our prickly, thin-skinned president: House Democrats are too liberal.  The left-wing netroots are out of touch.  Republicans are too partisan.  And starting around the first of the year: the media hate me.

It's going to be messy, but enjoyable.  And the best thing for the opposition to do is to do what mental hospital orderlies do when a patient is in the throes of a psychotic breakdown: stand back, avoid direct confrontation, remove all sharp objects, and let the patient tire himself out.

By all means, we have to save the historic Obama Presidency.

It's not about whether government confiscates more of its citizens' wealth.  Its not about whether higher taxes will weigh down the economy.

No, no, no.  For our boy President, it's about what everything is about.

Him.

Rob, did you mean to say prickly?

What we're seeing, I think, from our easy-going and always amusing commentator, is what shrinks call a Freudian Slip.

If you believe that government is our everything on Earth, then you'll also be inordinately frightened of any government gridlock. I think that's where Obama is. If the organs of government fail, he believes the country will die. In truth, the country would probably respond like getting a shot of adrenalin, if government stopped, but that's not something Obama could ever comprehend.

Again? (you couldn't hear it but that was done in a Rocky the Flying Squirrel voice)

I was brought up to think that you could only play a card once.  This guy's presidency is apparently in constant danger of destruction.

20 CEO’s from the top companies in this nation sang kum-ba-ya with Obama on the same day that the FCC is pushing illegitimate net neutrality rules and the Justice Department sued BP for a bazillion dollars.

Obama may be cracking up, but the hypocrisy and damage to our country continues.  I just wish business people would boycott meeting with this administration unless their actions change.  Obama’s words are meaningless.  I pray for more CEO’s with a backbone like Mort Zuckerman (yeah, that sounds odd, doesn’t it?)

Whoops!  Corrected!  I violated the Ricochet C-o-C.  I blame corporate media.

It must stink to have your Presidential legacy hinge upon a piece of legislation you were "held hostage" by.  Woe is him.

There's actually an old saying that goes "The fish cracks up from the head down"?

I never thought he had thick skin, by any means...a Presidential requirement. However, in recent days, we've had the pleasure of finding out that his thinnest skin is on the left side of his body. Potentially a wonderful source of entertainment. Obama dismissing the Right is a tad boring. Obama squirming over the Left is downright delightful.

Prepare yourself for this whining, self-justifying litany from our prickly, thin-skinned president: House Democrats are too liberal. The left-wing netroots are out of touch.  Republicans are too partisan. And starting around the first of the year: the media hate me...

...this corporeal existence is really holding me back and I've decided to just finally evolve into pure energy...

This precisely why I'm starting to wonder if he's going to want to run again in two years. Unless things really turn around for him, that is. He just cannot seem to take even the mildest criticism and I think he'd love to be doing something that will result in nothing but praise. The trick is that, in order to quit, he has to find a way to declare victory. Whatever that means.

Well, I'm paraphrasing.  It's the "fish rots from the head down."  But I like "cracks up" better.

Hilarious!

But I don't think he has to declare victory before he can quit.  I'm starting to think he won't run for a second term.  To "punish" us.

Unfortunately, the bill will pass.  But we can always hope...
