Obama Beats Bush for Poor Approval Ratings. Hollywood Depressed.

Just procrastinating before getting back to writing by comparing Gallup Poll presidential approval ratings. Look here to be startled. For all the Bush-bashing I had to endure in my profession, his actual approval ratings are boffo box office by comparison to the Big O's. And there are some other surprises, at least for me, as you scroll through the various presidential popularity contests. Any surprise you?

This is one thing that really IS Bush's fault!

That is pretty amazing, Denise. I would have put money on the opposite and lost...big time.

Amazing, indeed. Thank you.

Obama has a similar curve to Carter, but both are similar to Reagan's first two years. The difference is that after the midterms, Reagan steadily climbs. Carter and Obama show the opposite trend.
Geez, Truman's numbers are atrocious. Clinton's numbers aren't that surprising with the rally effect that impeachment produced. High numbers of Dems were circling the wagons. Looks like there may have been a similar effect for Obama, but it's already tapering off.
At some point during the Clinton administration, Gallup stopped asking the question "Do you approve of the President?" and started asking something along the lines of "Do you approve of the job the President is doing?" I may be wrong, but that was the time I was actually working in politics and wondered why no one else seemed to notice. Two very different questions. The latter would work in Clinton's favor, while I think the former would have worked in Bush's favor.

Acronymic error . Turns out MSM stands for " midstream " . They have let slip the reed basket, drifting in the Nile.

WOW. Very shocking.

Another interesting comparison is Obama to Reagan. Reagan's approval hit a low of 35%, but started to rebound around in late January of 1983.

Reagan's are surprising to me. I've been following them for some time now. But what struck me about Reagan is that he simply put his shoulder to the wind and pressed on. Obama is panicking, if his latest speeches are any indication. Not that the mudslinging is poor electioneering. Trouble is, he's too early out of the gate. You don't start throwing filth a year out from the election. He's already out of steam, but it's going to be pretty awful for him by Spring if he doesn't settle down. In which case he'll be setting a few more presidential "firsts", but not ones to be proud of.

Right when all of the pieces of the Reagan Supply Side Revolution were in place and the economy was starting it's almost 3 decade of supply side driven hyper growth.
The Democrats in Congress demanded that the tax cuts be delayed for 2 years and became law in 1983. Personal marginal tax rates went from something like 75% to 28%. One big boost to the economy was high income individuals were no longer hiding their incomes in non-economic tax shelters and were investing in business and new start-ups. The 80s were and amazing ride.

He's more than 2/3 of his way through his term, though. If he carries on at this level (39%), he'll have a lower average approval rating than Bush by around the Iowa Caucus, which would be a fun news item. If he stays below a 41% average for the rest of his term, he'll average less popular than Ford, which seems pretty doable.
The real challenge, though, will be to beat Carter and Truman, for which he would need to average <36% for the rest of his term. I think he can stay above that (on average). This seems terribly unfair, as Carter and Truman were both much better Presidents.

One interesting thing is that although Obama's more polarized by party than previous presidents, he's less polarized by education (excepting postgrads) than one would have thought. Some College, generally our best demographic by education, is better for Obama (42%) than High School or less (39%) or College Grad (37%).
Also, Obama's doing better amongst the middle income group that voted McCain than with the top income group, which voted for him. I'm not really sure what that means, but it probably means something.

I know this is going to sound racist, but I wonder what his numbers would be like without his near-perfect approval rating from African-Americans...that's an advantage none of the other presidents have: a large demographic group who will support him no matter what.
