With this morning's (expected) news that President Barack Obama is running for re-election, I'm trying to think of possible campaign slogans he could use. Maybe you can help me out. In the meantime, you have to see the video he sent to supporters today:

My favorite part is where the woman suggests that supporters have to work hard because this time around, President Obama has a full-time job. I like this not just because he was a United States Senator last election campaign but also because it reminds me of how many of my friends and family are out of work or underemployed. Which is probably not what the campaign was going for when they put that in.

"President Obama has a full-time job."  Darn right he does!! Do you know how hard and demanding it is to pick NBA brackets, golf, groove with celebrities like Paul McCartney and play soccer with Brazilian children ??

By the way, and perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but did you notice the 0 in 2012 at the end of the ad resembles a bullseye target? Just saying..

When you suggest  "We could probably survive  4 more years",   it that before or after you  factor in compounded interest?

I don't like any of the people in the ad.  They all look like the pushy, dimwitted creeps who ran the "Committee for World Democracy" at UCSD in the 1980s.  Perpetual political activists with no connection to the real world at all.  Of particular note is the woman at 0:52 who is letting us know that we can't wait around for Obama to show up and energize us.  That statement is so deeply revealing of the governing philosophy that's led us to $14B of debt that it's worth a blog post all by itself.

Come on, the ad makers found a white man over the age of 40 who supports Obama. Give them some credit! That had to have been immensely difficult.

I can't imagine that ad garnering more than a tepid golf clap from his supporters.  The calm "we have to come together and do this ourselves" belies an undertone of whistling past the graveyard or even a sense of being up the proverbial creek.  Perhaps 'tis just my jaundic'd eye.  Good thing it is just for his supporters, because to me this ad is "meh" as "meh" gets.

What strikes me is how the first video he chooses to release is directed not at a national audience as president but at the hardcore grassroots campaigners from whom he is anticipating some apathy. I'm also struck by how aggrieved and preemptively defensive the tone is.The left's rhetoric really seems to struggle when defending an incumbent:

So rather than showing us people who are enthusiastic about what he's accomplished, you have fear:

"I'm kind of nervous about it. It's like it's coming: 2012. Here it is..."

...defensive scolding:

"We can't say hey could you just take some time off and come and get us all energized? We'd better figure it out."

... nostalgia:

"I just saw the energy and hope he had for this country -- even though I couldn't vote at the time..."

... and a really lame preemptive capitulation:

"I don't agree with Obama on everything..."

"There are so many things that are still on the table that need to be addressed..."

"Well it seems like the last couple of elections we've had have almost been like turning points..."

Most distasteful of all is the underdog positioning.

Sure, just like England could have survived 4 more years of Neville Chamberlain.

I'm not entirely sure they can count on his vote in 2012. I'm guessing Ed might have a lot more to say if pressed to elaborate on the concept that he doesn't agree with Obama "on everything."

Obama 2012 = Capital Flight = Income redistribution on a global scale.

I'm sure someone like Rob could make it snappier but the sentiment hits home to me.

This is where Twitter really shines. Best ones I've seen so far:

@JonahNRO: "People of Earth Stop Your Bickering, I am Obama!" #Obama2012Slogans

@JtLOL: I Understand Your Disappointment #Obama2012Slogans

@ChrisofRights: More Hope. Even Less Change. #Obama2012Slogans

@MoronPundit: Don't swap horses in midstream, racists. #Obama2012Slogans

What's amazing about the ad is there is not one person talking about his accomplishments. I wonder why?

So now he's not even appearing in his own campaign?

They say half of life is just showing up.  Which starts him at a 50% disadvantage in every aspect of his presidency.

Say you're an Obama supporter and for the first time in your life, you decide to think. What did you get for your Obama vote?

  • Unemployment at a "low" of 8.8% even with some fiddling of the numbers about 3 months ago.
  • Inflation rising, especially on food and other essentials.
  • Gitmo, still open.
  • Skyrocketing gas prices, enriching all of Bush and Cheney's oil buddies.
  • Iraq and Afghanistan still ongoing, with Afghanistan a listless mess.
  • Gitmo, still open.
  • A new war in Libya which seems to have been poorly managed from the start.
  • A president who spends every weekend on the golf course and who goes on so many lavish vacations, it's become more of a laugh line than Bush's "vacations" to Crawford.
  • Gitmo, still open.
  • A president, named Hussein whose grandfather was Muslim, but is still hated and mocked by the Arab street.
  • A cozy relationship with big business, most notably with GE's Jeff Immelt.
  • Gitmo, still open.
  • Joblessness for young black males through the roof.
  • A GOP tidal wave in 2010 and more coming in 2012 in Congress.
  • Gitmo, still open.

How's that hope 'n' change workin' out for ya?

"Barack Obama for a Weak, Subservient [and Broke] America"?  Maybe that's expecting too much honesty. I can't seem to shake John Kerry's 2004 "...for a Stronger America", which seemed so in-credible to me in the dictionary sense, given his apparent intent to cement America's "paper tiger" credentials into bona fides.

Another indelible memory of '04: a young voter's "Kerry Me" shirt, which seemed more candid than may have been intended. Some people truly do want and expect to be "carried" by their government. Like so many here, I ask only the freedom to stand, walk, and run on my own.

Mollie, I hope your title wasn't meant to be reassuring. Are you saying America could "absorb" another Barack Obama presidency?

The "o" should have been an "a".
