The Democrats spent three days last week firing up supporters of abortion and same-sex marriage. Growing businesses like Hobby Lobby are facing millions of dollars in fines because they refuse to give a pinch of incense to Caesar and offer up a few innnocents to Moloch. Meanwhile, Mrs. Romney is assuring voters that a Romney Administration wouldn't really care about any of that because those issues are just "distractions." For many of us, those are the only issues that cause us to even care about politics at all.
Paul Ryan said some good things about those issues today, but there is a clear problem with mixed messages.

Run on the Ryan plan. If you don't run on that and you get a landslide in the Electoral College then the Dems will say you don't have a mandate because you didn't promise to implement the Ryan plan when you were campaigning. We need you to have this mandate; without it you will be weakened.
Of course, if you run on the Ryan plan and you get a landslide in the Electoral College then the Dems will claim that you still don't have a mandate because Obama was doomed to lose anyway, so your win doesn't mean anything. Nobody will listen to them, but they will say that anyway.

I want you both to bring the heat. Hammer BHO as incompetent and his policies as ruinous. The two biggest domestic issues as I see it are the staggering debt and the absolute need to balance the budget. We simply must live within our means.
I think you win when framing the debate as limited government, free enterprise and liberty vs BHO vision of a centrally controlled, centrally planned society and economy.
You must make the case for fiscal responsibility and to trust the American people with the liberty to make choices based on their own self interest.
Then pray everyday for this country and that God's will be done. I pray for that everyday and for you.

Reading through these 50+ comments I get the sense that we feel a disconnect between ourselves and the campaign. We feel more like fans watching our team on the TV rather than members of the team... or participants in a movement.
I think we the voters need to feel like we are part of this thing. We want to save our country through Mitt. Rather than hoping the guy we vote for saves the country. ยท 11 hours ago

You are correct, but that is the nature of politics American style. The country is too big for any sense of intimacy with a candidate. But that's okay.

Edmund Alexander: When you get to the debates, remember: the moderator is not your obstacle. Obama/Biden is your obstacle. You are there to debate them, moderated by the press; not to jump through whatever hoops the moderator throws at you.
Take it to your opponent, and keep them on the defensive.
When the moderator asks you a stupid question, as they certainly will, respond with something like, "Our country is in the midst of disasters of both foreign and domestic policy, and you're asking me something like that? I'd rather use my time to address something important: ____." (Fill in the blank -- energy independence, key health policy issues, America's standing in the world...) And then address the issue with an "elevator speech". This is no time to let the MSM shape your message. Know what you want to say and then say it....regardless of whether they ask the right question.

I'm a Santorum supporter but am largely pleased with Mitt's campaign so far. Good ads, good convention speech, great appearances by Sununu, very good statement on recent events. Still, some changes are in order:
1) The Obama is a nice guy routine has got to go. Maybe Mitt can sorowfully confess to have been in error on this and go on to list the numerous particulars.
2) Per the above, don't be afraid to label your opponent for who he is. Namely a narcissistic, power hungry, stealth socialist with just enough street smarts to have figured out from an early age how to impress the clueless white liberals that he's made a lifetime's work to impress. Now, we don't need to have Mitt going all Gingrich stylistically. Stating these truths more in sorrow than anger is definitely the way to go.
3) I've yet to see an interviewer really grill Mitt on this, but I get the impression that the word "repeal" with respect to Obamacare does not mean the same to Mitt as it does to me. Repeal means signing a 2 page full repeal bill, not a selective waiver. Please do.

Sorry you're feeling sidelined, but Mitt's "small ball" strategy is entirely focused on 800,000 "persuadable" undecideds in a handful of swing states. His messaging is tailored to what hethinks they want to hear.
If those undecideds were persuadable then they would have been persuaded a long time ago. They'll vote only with their gut. The best way to reach their gut is for all of us to be yelling "CHARGE!" in the same direction.

Obama does do it so well because there is no substance to his argument. It is a highly emotional, racially charged (however subtly), good ole fashioned class warfare attack. Geez, anybody can feel comfortable participating inthatdog and pony show.
But it + substance is better than substance alone.

I dunno... Obama, Bush, Clinton, and Reagan seemed to connect pretty well.
But I'm not sure intimacy is what I'm after. It's the idea of one of us rising up to say "LET'S DO IT!" as opposed to "We need to fix this country!" and Mitt saying "I'd like to apply for that job.".

Just heard Mitt answering Stephanopoulos on the film that allegedly caused the uproar and Mitt was weak. He ought to state his position clearly and let the MSM live with it. The voters will know what he means. Dancing for the press doesn't impress anyone.

Mitt needs to very publicly address large and small biz owners directly. He needs to tell them that they should put plans into motion now that will add workers-- that we can't afford to wait until January to get things moving. Mitt can lower taxes and cut back regulations then for real, but we need to move now. This would highlight how Obama's failure has put our economy in danger and how we need to turn it around. Voters would pick up on Mitt being a man of action and contrasting with O.

Paul Ryan made these fantastic videos not long ago describing the structural problems with Medicare and the options for reform. I remember thinking, "Wow! Here's a 'Pub that can make an economic argument effectively & simply!" Please make these arguments...publicly, forcefully, & regularly up until election. If the voters decline -- fine. But I want these ideas sold *hard* before I have to acknowledge that I'm fighting a losing battle.

And one more thing: Play to win. I'm afraid this will turn into the McCain campaign. Do you want this or not? I agree with George Will in that if the GOP cannot pull this off, in this climate, it should leave politics altogether.

Attack. Attack. Attack. From every angle and direction that you can find and feel comfortable. You must keep on the offense. Remind people with actual spending statistics the way Reagan would. The election is lost without Obama's spending statistics and tales of Obama's attacks on freedom and his hidden Obamacare taxes.
Furthermore, remember that you may have to attack the media almost more than Obama. In many ways, the media is the real enemy. You must go around them the way Reagan did, but you will need to use commercials and non-traditional media.
Attack the culture of dependency and food stamps. They are attacking your economic status, aren't they? Punch back twice as hard! Get personal with the salary statistics of the media talking-heads, if they are constantly attacking your success.
If you wish to support more military spending, don't do it as your commercials are stating as a way to save jobs. Keynesian economics doesn't magically make an exception for defense spending.
The real question is not "Are you better off today than four years ago?", but "Do you think you will be better off in four years with Obama as president?"
