Guys, guys, I've got to know you pretty well by now and what I know is this: you really haven't got time at the moment for any story which doesn't have to do with the Republican primaries.

So I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. In his capable paws right now Blue Yeti is holding the master tape - well actually it's a digital file - of the next Radio Free Delingpole podcast. And let me tell you, it's a Radio Free Delingpole podcast like nothing you have ever heard on Ricochet before. It has drug references, it name-checks musical genres so obscure even your kids' really cool street friends haven't heard of them, and it makes almost no mention of US politics whatsoever except near the end where I have a snidey dig at Occupy.

Oh, and it has music, because that is the USP of this particular Radio Free Delingpole episode. I've recorded it with an old school friend of mine, Eddy Temple Morris, who did something much more interesting with his life than me and became a world-class DJ. We each brought in some favorite recent tracks to talk about. And I quickly realized how geriatric my tastes are compared to Eddy's. Which probably means you'll like my choices a lot more than you like his. Or maybe not: that's what I shall be fascinated to find out.

What I'm really hoping is that you'll listen to it in the spirit of adventure and open-mindedness - as, if say, on a whim you'd gone to hear an elderly prof give a lecture on Sanskrit; or if, maybe, you'd suddenly discovered your daughter was dating a young man called Skrillex and you were genuinely interested to learn what the fellow did for a living. (Skrillex is one of Eddy's sampled artistes, btw).

What I'm hoping you won't do is react like one of those stereotypical Dads who goes: "What is this racket?" and puts on his trusty Country & Western CD instead. Recording this program was an education for me (Eddy really knows his stuff and is inspirational in communicating it) and I'd really like to do some more. (As an adjunct to my more political podcasts - don't worry - not as a replacement).

Oh, memo to Peter Robinson: it's OK. You get an exemption.

Humph!  You call that music?  It's people like you what causes unrest.  In a Rational Society, you'd be segregated from decent, hard-working folks and required for your own good to have nothing on your Walkman but Joy Division and Smiths.

I do like the Smiths, I must say, Grendel. I wonder if any Ricochet subscriber - anyone at all - has actually heard of Skrillex.

With this much build-up and hype, I expect the podcast to be Flash-animated!

I can't listen until I get home from work.

Racket is a relative term.  I'll listen to just about anything once, sometimes twice.  My favorite music criticism is a line I heard attributed to Mark Twain: "Wagner's music is better than it sounds."

A lot of young adults like country music. You could say some of it is a sort of country-pop hybrid, but it is very popular with younger crowds.

Years ago, when I was posting music on Myspace (hey, it was cool once!), I came across a gifted British songwriter named Oonagh Ryder. She has since taken most of her music off Myspace and off the internet, but there are still a couple songs floating around like this one.

The grass is always greener on the other side. As a songwriter who rarely writes story lyrics, I greatly admire them.

One of my favorite lines from Monty Python. Some others are "A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat." and "I've always said, there's nothing an agnostic can't do if he really doesn't know if he believes in anything or not."

Not before now, but I have heard of dubstep as a genre.

The Smiths sound like Billy Idol on Prozac, just before he falls asleep.

I don't listen to much electronica, but Skrillex sounds more interesting than most. This part makes me think of a killer robot run amok.

I knew there had to be a reason why I hate it so much.

Heresy. The Smiths are awesome. Billy Idol is rubbish.

This is the problem with working with someone 8 time zones ahead of you. You never know what you'll wake up to. We'll have this up in a couple of hours.

The best modern country is Red Dirt country.

After hearing Randy Rogers and Cody Canada poke fun at Nashville in a song years ago, I started my own: "I've been told that country music's long been dead in Tennessee / Instead of poets, they hire faces and they sing a lawyer's creed / If you're really so darn country, then why do you tell me so? / If you were true, then I'd already know."

There's nothing I hate more in country music than some idiot trying to convince me he's a true kicker or farmboy. Sing about life, not yourself.

My fiancé, a high school teacher and music buff, said this when I e-mailed him to ask if he knows of Skrillex:

Electronic music dude... He makes epic-sounding dubstep. [The high school] kids like him. What I’ve heard is ok.

I can't say I've heard of Skrillex, but I'd be interested in the rig your friend brought to the session. I'm a long-time user of virtual instruments (which is the core of "electronica" but also of most modern pop and country music) and have a fairly well-equipped toolbox.

Few things delight me more than to tease my nephew (who plays drums in a band at Disney World) for being so old-school as to use analog instruments. It makes him crazy.

I really like your podcast mr. Dellingpole and I find it a nice break not to have to hear about our uninspiring candidates. I really enjoyed hearing about the fight for better schools in England. What I want to hear more about is English politics and European Politics.

Everyone in the world talks about what America is doing at least that is how it seems to me. I want to know what the rest of the world is doing. I want to know who the politicians in England are that I should detest and who are the real heroes I should applaud. I know to boo the EU but I want to know who I should cheer for on the continent of my birth.

In that case, John, perhaps you could recommend a good sequencer to me. I used to compose riffs in FruityLoops, but lost the disc at some point. What's the latest and greatest in an amateur's price range (Windows 7, not Mac)?

Agreed. I immediately change the station at the first mention of rock or roll in rock music as well. Music should never be about music.
