North Carolina to Add Marriage Amendment to State Constitution

North Carolina voters have overwhelmingly approved adding Amendment One to the state constitution. Amendment One bans same-sex marriage. The vote as of this evening (May 8) is about 60% in favor of the amendment.
The Raleigh, NC News and Observer is leading with the picture above, which shows why this issue poses a fascinating problem for liberal Democrats. It's difficult to claim that all those in favor of Amendment One are racist throwbacks to the KKK.

This is what happened in California in 2008. It was all the Black and Latino voters that Obama drew out to the polls that voted down the same-sex marriage law here. But no one likes to talk about that. They want to blame money from the Mormons.

It's almost as if people don't want to recognize same-sex marriage. But that can't be it, it has to be special interests!
For the record, I don't much care one way or the other if gays want to get married - to my way of thinking it's not really any of my business - but I do feel that if it were recognized, there'd be a fast suit or press to force institutions that don't recognize marriage between same-sex couples to do so or to close shop.
The number of Catholic adoption agencies active today in Massachusetts is Exhibit A for my belief.

I watched the Piers Morgan's interview with Jonah Goldberg. Jonah used a phrase that Piers, although an educated man (?), admits to never hearing before: "category error." Jonah graciously helped him understand the phrase. It is a category error to equate the preservation of marriage as "bigotry" and the non-approval of homosexuality as "hate." Although, it is difficult to discuss these things in an age where objective moral values are basically denied, and many on both sides have shown no grace. I submit we don't see hate on this man's face, but rather a love for something good.

A few comments:
1. Does the joy expressed in this thread (and the other) count as schadenfreude?
2. Conservatives were on the wrong side of the last great civil rights struggle too.
3. This is the kind of thing that makes a person a libertarian: The notion that a majority of citizens can, through voting, deny rights to their fellow citizens.

Fred,I think that this issue is not about the privacy of the bedroom, but public policy regarding education, adoption, divorce, and more. Somebody's perspective is going to lose. Catholics lose regarding adoption in Massachessets. Christian students lose in the classroom via curricula. So yes, in NC today, the other side does not win their desire. The worldviews don't share much of the same horizon, regarding this issue. And aren't people free to vote their values into the system?

Fred,Even if your point #2, above, were true, it doesn't follow that a mistake made in the past equates to a mistake in the present. The issue has to stand on its own merit. You're making a statement about people in the past, not addressing the definition of marriage.

All examples of how government involvement in things makes society more contentious.
And of course they're free to vote their values. My problem isn't with the values, it's with a system that allows a majority of citizens to deprive their fellow citizens of rights.
