No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
Indiana's WishTV today reports that Governor Mitch Daniels, whom many of us hoped would run in the Republican presidential primaries, will very likely become the next president of Purdue University.
The Purdue Board of Trustees will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday in Steward Center’s Loeb Playhouse to vote on a nominee to be the school’s 12th president. Several sources close to the proceedings tells WISH-TV that the nominee is Daniels. After the vote, the president-elect will be introduced, the school said in a news release.
Daniels' office had no comment Tuesday afternoon. However, sources with connections to both Purdue and the governor said it's a done deal.
And with that move, Gov. Daniels seems to have removed himself from consideration for Mitt Romney's running mate.

No less politics than being VP, but more dignity.

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
The buzz I've heard among Indiana reporters is that every source they're talking to is denying Daniels is interested.
Hearsay, of course; just relaying it.

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
So does this mean we won't have to hear about Mitch Daniels anymore? (not that he's a bad guy; just that I'm tired of will he/won't he; seems like it's been going on forever)

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
Decent fellow indeed but think academia is surely the most appropriate place for him to be.

I wasn't one of the many, so I can't say that I am too distraught. His wife will be pleased, I guess.
More to the point, it seems that Mr Rubio is being vetted, after all. It's almost like you can't believe anything that the lamestream media says, these days. Unexpectedly.

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
The only news less exciting than Daniels not accepting the VP slot would be news that he had.
(An observation made without regard to whether he might have been a good choice.)

He seems like a decent guy. It makes me wonder if the press really is driving all the decent people out of politics.

Yes, because he was so inept as governor of Indiana.

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
Are there term limits in Indiana for Gov? I didn't realize he wasn't going to run in 2012.
Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
The Governor of Indiana may only serve two consecutive terms (which Daniels has done) and may remain in office 8 years max in any 12 year period. But hypothetically, if Daniels wants to run again in 4 years, he can.

Pls don't put 'words in my mouth.' Daniels was an excellent governor, but the country is in dire financial straits and requires a president with unusual fiscal acumen who has dealt in the major leagues.

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
Good. And good riddance, to boot. He certainly is a smart man. He may be a good man. But when the opportunity to serve his country presented itself, he cared more for personal peace than for the good of the country. The whole problem with Washington is that it is full of people whose first interest is their own. There is nothing wrong with people caring for their own concerns. But let them stay out of public life. We need people that are willing to serve despite the cost.

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
That's unfortunate. I liked Troy's idea of choosing a VP that didn't have ambitions for the top spot and could act as a trusted adviser. Gov. Daniels would have been good in that type of role. But he also has a proven record as a state executive if, God forbid, something were to happen.

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
I had the pleasure of spending this very weekend in the very jewel of the Midwest, Indianapolis.
I am a completely unapologetic fan of Mitch Daniels. I'm sorry to see he will not be in contention for the VP spot.
I'm not one to buy into this "Romney-elected-disappointment-sour-grapes-syndrome" so many on the Right have bought into recently, in which we eat our own over issues of "servitude".
I, personally, respect the man for whatever decisions he makes regarding his public life.

To be clear: Governor Daniels changed the world in Indiana. He took on the public sector unions and beat 'em before it was cool -- before Christie or Walker or Kasich or any of these guys. And he freed the private sector and put the knife to state gov't to levels those guys could only dream of pulling off. Hopefully they will someday, but currently they're all "striving to be Mitch".
But he's humble and low key, so he's assumed to be a squishy sort of guy. Not so. He's a velvet hammer.

Re: No Vice Presidency for President Mitch Daniels
If it turns out to be true, it's a good move for both Daniels and Purdue. Imagine raising the productivity of a university, as he has done with Indiana's state government. And he no doubt will raise a lot of money for the university.
