Anatomy of weird web rumors: About two days ago people started sending me links to a report in the Israeli press that Turkey is trying to broker a truce between factions in Gaza and Israel. This is now all over the Internet; people on Facebook are debating it very earnestly--as if it's a fact.

The Turks are denying it:

Diplomatic sources in Ankara, approached by Turkish Cihan news agency on Monday, ruled out any such meeting with the Israeli side.

"It would not be natural when you consider the state of affairs regarding bilateral relations between Turkey and Israel," the sources, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, said.

And the Israelis--well, diplomatic sources in Tel Aviv, approached by Ricochet, said the same thing.

I really don't think this is happening. If it is, I don't think anyone would be leaking this to Inyan Mercazi, the original Israeli source of the report.  You want to leak, you probably don't leak to them.

I'd save the debating energy for a story that's better-sourced.

So in a perfect world, there would be no comments here, right?

Claire Berlinski, Ed.

Well, the comments would be about, "Isn't it weird how suddenly these stories can seem like facts." And I'm not saying, by the way, that this is decidedly, categorically untrue, only that I see no good reason to think it is.
