I've just received quite a remarkable e-mail from my publicist at Basic. She's failed to arrange a single media appearance for me--or book-signing--for my American tour for the paperback launch of There is No Alternative. She blithely explains that "without a direct tie-in with the news, it’s a harder sell."

Behold: This is why the publishing industry is dying.

You know any local radio talk show hosts? I bet some of them might grasp the direct tie-in to the news. Would you please put them in touch with me? Send them to my website. Tell them my vocal cords are all warmed up and ready to go.

Claire Try Barbara Simpson at KSFO radio, San Francisco. She's cerebral and frequently does author interviews that aren't "newsworthy".

Claire:

I emailed Barbara and sent her your web link. Her email is babeinthebunker@yahoo.com. She broadcasts Saturday and Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Best wishes on your tour.

Claire Berlinski

Thank you, Kenneth! I'll write to her right now. But my point is that nothing could actually be more newsworthy than a discussion, ahead of the election, about socialism, free markets, conservative ideas, what Thatcher did and symbolized, and the lessons Americans need to draw from her example. Nothing, frankly, not one thing, could be more newsworthy, unless Israel actually does attack Iran this weekend.

Well, in hindsight, you should have penned a Lady GaGa biography.

Let me know if Barbara responds.

Claire: You know who else you should contact? John Batchelor. Absolutely the most intelligent, wide-ranging, eclectic man on radio. Not necessarily for your book, but for exposure. I'm sure he would be fascinated by your knowledge of Turkey - he has lots of foreign correspondents on his show.

Victor Davis Hansen appears on his show, too.

Claire Berlinski

Do anyone have the name of his producer, by any chance? I've been on his show, I think. Good idea to contact him.

Have you thought of a 'blog tour', during which you line up interviews with a series of political blogs? I've seen it done by historical fiction authors, and seems to be reasonably successful. Say, Powerline, The Daily Caller, American Spectator, Hot Air, etc etc.

And I've received your brother's book today, "Fieldwork", will report further when I finish it...

When designing your website, remember, you want to send a message and make some impact with every element, including your own photo.

I won't comment on the person in the photo here, but the photographer knew what they were doing:

Also, I bought (and enjoyed) "Germania" by S Winder, primarily because I liked the little video he has put up on his Amazon.com page. I read Elizabeth Chadwick's books, (historical fiction), and she puts a lot of thought into her videos, which are put up on Amazon also.

Goodness, etoile, are you saying my photo fails to make an impact? [Editors: Delete his account and off with his head.]

Amazing. Is your publicist not in the job of publicizing books, or has she nothing on her brain but hair, or what?

I know no local radio hosts. However, my parents, in the Chicago area, have contacts with local conservative think tanks and book clubs, and I could pass these along to you if they could be of any help.

Judging from the photo of you we see here, a goodly portion of your, ahem, presence would seem to be lost in making radio-only "appearances" (is it really an appearance if the audience can't see you?). So I hope you're giving lectures and trying to get televised, too.

Midget, all contacts welcome--very welcome. No plans to be in Chicago, but very happy to phone-in anywhere. Thank you for the kind intimation about my photo. [Editors: Midget is to be promoted at the next Party re-shuffle.]

Claire, I've emailed your information and website to www.hughhewitt.com. Hugh has a daily radio talk show from California that is nationally distributed. His frequent guests include Victor Davis Hanson, Mark Steyn, Christopher Hitchens, and others (not enough coffee yet this morning to remember). In particular, he has at-length interviews with authors, both fiction and nonfiction. One of the latest I heard was with Melanie Phillips. He has an intellectual bent to his show which I think would be a great fit for you!

Ms. Berlinski, I would love to hear you and Peter Robinson talk about this on Uncommon Knowledge and I'm sure lots of other Ricocheters would too. If you're swinging through California, I think that would be a great way to get some publicity and talk in depth about your new book.

And if you ever find yourself in Japan, please let me know as I and the rest of us here at Republicans Abroad Japan would love to set up some media interviews and speeches for you here!

Claire Berlinski
Briar Ann: Claire, I've emailed your information and website to www.hughhewitt.com.

Briar Ann, really, heartfelt thanks.

I've now started an "Explain the news tie-in to @basicbooks" #socialism campaign on Twitter, by the way. Oh, and for the conspiracy theorists among us, a treat! Who owns Basic?

We've got that covered, thank goodness, thanks to the vast Ricochet-wing conspiracy. And if the Republicans Abroad would like to host me and can swing for a ticket, I'll pop right over. I'd love to be big in Japan.

You mean occasional-Ricochet-visitor John Hinderaker hasn't asked you to come on his Saturday radio show yet? Or Jason Lewis?

It is obvious that Basic's PR group is too lazy/unimaginative for the work needed- they want to do the usual bit of calling the top ten list of author tours and get on to the next book. Sort of like Hillary doing the vote thing in the big primary states, and losing the nomination because TVG's ground troops buttonholed every attendee at every non-primary precinct-caucus state.

You need a young person who is a senior in college- or a recent grad- in "communications" or journalism, one who is looking for a resume-builder. That person would then easily be able to troll the web for the talk show sites in every town and identify the hosts who use their brains, and might like to add an occasional non-local guest, particularly an international-woman-of-mystery-latter-day-Mata-Hari.

I would ask John Podhoretz (whom you know, is an alum of that world and still connected) for a list of the conservative college newspapers, and use that to recruit my personal publicist.

I will not comment on Claire's photograph, for fear of being mistaken for a stalker. But suffice it to say, the Right has all the good-looking women.

What about the Chicago radio chap, I think his name is Rosenthal, who interviewed Stanley Kurtz, author of Radical in Chief in '08? He may find your book intellectually stimulating. Where better to talk about the failure of socialism than in Chicago? Good luck,

Claire Berlinski

These are great suggestions. There's good news on this front, given that the subject is actually newsworthy, I'm filling the calendar quickly. I'll update soon.
