No Peeking, Claire

This coming Thursday, I'll be sitting down to tape an episode of Uncommon Knowledge with Ricochet's own, inimitable Claire Berlinski.
I figure I'll talk with Claire about three broad topics:
- Claire's book, There is No Alternative: Why Margaret Thatcher Matters
- Turkey, Islam, and the Middle East
- Claire herself. Istanbul? Really?
Any questions Ricochet members would like to suggest?

Re: No Peeking, Claire
Yeah. Since she's eager to defend the potential for Muslim moderation, does she think it would be a good idea for Imam's to wear Snuggli's and Crocs while they're calling for Death to the Jews?

Sorry, I didn't mean Crocs. I was thinking of fuzzy slippers. With those googly eyes.

Re: No Peeking, Claire
In her book Claire describes Thatcher's victories over international Communism, withwhich Americans are familiar, but also her battles and victories against domestic socialism, which was ascendant in Britain in the 1970s, and which are less well known over here.
Many ascribe a similar passion for "socialistic" solutions to Obama and his team. Does Claire see parallels between Britain of the '70's under Wilson and Callahan and the U.S. of today? If so, is there anyone amongst the political voices in the U.S. who can lead a "Thatcherite" revolution, or who even understands it?

Re: No Peeking, Claire
I was fortunate enough to land Claire for 30 minutes on my own podcast. I plan on covering the same first two topics as you, Mr. Robinson, but I don't know how deeply I'll get into either of them. I have the feeling that we'll spend most of the time on her book and its relevance to what's happening in American today (and I have an idea about Glenn Beck I'd like to try out on her). I'm really looking forward to your interview (and wish with only a tinge of jealousy that I won't get more time with her!).
Re: No Peeking, Claire
Peter, you knew I'd look.
Jimmie, we can talk as long as you'd like--there's nothing else on the schedule that evening. You want to talk longer, fine by me.

Peter,
Speaking of Uncommon Knowledge, could you talk to the folks over at NRO about fixing the audio RSS feed for this (great) show. It is broken for the last two episodes (Sowell and Barbour): points to non-existent mp3 files. I listen to the podcasts while out exercising, and miss them.
I have emailed NRO's webmaster about this without receiving a response.

Re: No Peeking, Claire
That is so neat that you are doing this for one of the subscribers, Claire. Jimmie, how can I listen to your podcast?
Re: No Peeking, Claire
With so many writers (and creators) in her family, is there ever any rivalry? I know Claire's brother and father have helped her with books and she's so grateful for their help, but was that process ever tricky? Any hurt feelings? Always wonderful? Growing up -- or growing into a writer -- how did that family-as-editors thing develop? How does each member of her family view writing, the writing process, or the role of writers, differently?

Re: No Peeking, Claire
I'd like to hear her expand a bit on the corruption issue after that very interesting article. Any civil society hollows out when you cannot trust its basic institutions. The current "bail out California pensions and everything in Illinois" movement by sleazy "where's mine" Illinois-origin politicians seems to me to threaten fracture in US internal relations as residents of responsibly-managed states rebel over bailing out profligate sisters. That dwarfs banks and TARP by orders of magnitude.
(Edit- thanks to BSA for the edit button, now I am no longer talking about "corruotion" in the first line)

Re: No Peeking, Claire
Thanks, but no, that doesn't get me an mp3 file that I can load onto my portable for listening on-the-go. The audio RSS feed does exactly what I need, but has been broken for the last two episodes (Sowell and Barbour). The feed items point to files that are non-existent ... so either the files need to be loaded to the server in that location, or the links in the feed items need to reflect their actual location.

Re: No Peeking, Claire
Hmm- I agree that Sowell link is bad (it downloads 165k), but I got the full 41 minutes of Gov. Barbour at NRO's RSS feed. 49 megs at (unnecessarily hi-fi) 160 kbs rate.

Re: No Peeking, Claire
I'd like to know about Turkey's prospects longterm, not just its immediate future, in which Claire anticipates a rebuke of the semi-Islamist AKP. Specifically, I'd like to know Claire's thoughts on Steyn's theory that Turkey's underlying problem is demographic: the more Islamist-inclined countryside, he says, is "outbreeding" the more secular, Western-leaning city-dwellers. (Google "Steyn: Who lost Turkey?" for details) Steyn seems to consider Turkey a sort of case study of broader, worldwide trends. So, would an AKP defeat be merely one happy upward bounce of a stone which is, in the big picture, tumbling downhill?

Re: No Peeking, Claire
A British Prime Minister is more powerful than an American President, right? Did Thatcher have political advantages to press her policies that President, like Reagan, would predictably not have? Were any aspects of her stewardship distinctively British, rather than conservative?

Re: No Peeking, Claire
Looking forward to it! So, are you going to Turkey, Peter? Or is Claire coming to the U.S.?
