The State of the Union was a display of ideological obduracy that may foreshadow economic disaster and the situation in the middle east looks urgent and dire--so, of course, I've been pondering the Oscar nominations.  There have been a lot of complaints from complainers that there are exactly no black people up for awards this year.  And, you know what?  They have a point.  Not about the nominations because who cares?  But the reason there are no blacks nominated is because there were no roles in which our many unbelievably great black actors could show their stuff.  I believe the reason for this is because Hollywood is full of liberals and if liberals ever allowed themselves to ponder what their policies have done to poor blacks in America they would go mad and die so instead they just ignore them.  All right, I probably made that up.  But given the black talent pool, a year of all white movies does kind of, like, stink, doesn't it?  Maybe we need a black version of The Cosby Show to help Hollywood liberals be less afraid of people who look different from them.

But Drew! You're forgetting that movie about the train that wouldn't stop.  With Denzel Washington.  Bump the count up from 0 black roles to 1 black role.

I'm pretty sure there was a black penguin in Toy Story 3.

I think it stems from the fact that casting directors can't think out of the box when casting. Why not Morgan Freeman as King George VI? What? You mean Elizabeth II isn't black?

Our preeminent black actors are offered so many lucrative roles that they, quite rightly, will churn out as many movies as they possibly can, without regard to artistic merit.

Sometimes it seems to me that I haven't seen a movie in years that didn't feature Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington or Cuba Gooding, Jr.

If these guys want to cash in making Pop Tarts movies, they have no cause to complain when they're not showered with filet mignon awards at Oscar time.

A few quotes from Morgan Freeman, one of my favorite actors:

"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man."

"I don't want a Black History Month. Black history is American history."

"Give me something interesting to play and I'm happy."

The fine actors mentiond pick and choose what they wish to do, simple.

Why elect to make poor films just to celebrate their successfull blackness ???

One does loath remakes, save it is time to revive "Titanic" with you know who as the master of the the unsinkable... When the ship approaches the iceberg, it will be carried to safety on the magical mists of liberal thought and Fairy dust...

Had to do that...

Haven't seen many smart white guys in movies lately. What did all these actors do to get a nomination ?

A One-eyed sunuvabitch, 2 crackheads, stuttering royal, psychopath southy, and a guy cuts off his own arm !! Whew - we earned it.

You could stuff all those guys into one movie !

Andrew Klavan

Actually, The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington was great - and as far as I'm concerned, they can nominate the Denz for anything - but, darn it, that's not the point!  The point is that these hypocritical liberals should be flogged in the public square, then suspended by their feet while we hurl vegetables at them.  In a manner that promotes civil discourse, naturally.

Jack Black.  Very funny, Pseudo.  Everybody's a comedian...

The crime is that Waiting for Superman didn't get nominated for documentary. Amazing, and an insult to minority kids, in a sense.

Oh, come on, it's not a conspiracy to keep black people out of the Oscars.

Not like, say, the Illinois Supreme Court with the Chicago mayor's office.

Ah come on.  You know wealthy coastal urbanites hate being reminded that money doesn't solve everything.  Of course they don't wish to be reminded of what has happened to blacks, or native Americans.  That would disrupt their redistribution of wealth approach to life.

Seriously, if importing subsidized stuff from China (paid for with debt we may never pay back) is such a bad thing, why is "redistributing wealth" feasible?  The evidence is clear: balance of trade dysfunction cancel out the benefits of direct transfers, no net increase in social welfare occurs.

This is just as true between Harlem and greater New York as between Africa and the United States.  You don't redistribute wealth; you redistribute final demand: China got rich from selling to Americans, not from Americans "giving" wealth to China.

It really shows how out-of-touch (willfully or otherwise) that Hollywood is, given that new book about how students learn literally nothing in the first two years of college.

Now ya dunnit.  Next year we'll see an award for the best performance by a black actor.  And then the best performance by a black actress, and then . . . well, who knows where it stops?  You will be responsible, Andrew, for prolonging a national agony from mere hours to perhaps many days.  Shame on you.

For those who haven't seen it - "The Wire" from HBO (five seasons) is one of the best things I've ever seen - detailing the issues surrounding drugs vs police.  The black (AA?) actors are incredible, the characters richly drawn, and the writing superb.  But as one of the (black) actors pointed out - there are just no opportunities out there.  It really is sad.

Oscars my eye. It is time for the Ricochet Film Awards. Contributors and Members nominate films. We hold a preliminary vote where everyone votes for those nominees they feel have merit. Take the top five, one vote per person, and give the winners a year's membership.

PS: If someone gave Morgan Freeman the Best Supporting Actor for his part in RED, I would not be upset.

PPS: Mattie Ross is the viewpoint character and on screen more than anyone or anything else, possibly including the camera lens. (True Grit) How is that a supporting role?
