I'm doing a radio interview later this morning, the purpose of which is to answer which of the following developments matters most to Republicans and the 2012 election.

1) Newt Gingrich (at long last) announcing he's in;

2) Ron Paul about to do the same, we assume, with a "major announcement" tomorrow in New Hampshire;

3) Mitt Romney trying to improve his campaign's "health" -- a task that's become more difficult thanks in part to Wall Street Journal bestowing the title of "Obama's Running Mate";

4) Cheri Daniels, wife of the Idiana governor, today giving her first closely-scrutinized political speech, the keynote address at the Indiana GOP's spring dinner.

My choice is #4. Because . . .

1) Gingrich and Paul aren't really news. Nor are they, in my opinion, top-tier candidates (plenty of name recognition, yes, and the potential to raise some $$$$. But let's see how that translates to an actual groundswell);

2) Romney's speech could be a snoozer. He has to own up to the shortcomings of the reform plan he launched in Massachusetts. That's what reporters will be looking for.

3) The wild card here is Cheri Daniels. She could become the Alma Powell of thid election, famous for talking her huband out of running. Or, if she's up for it, then we presume Mitch Daniels is a go -- and the GOP is re-defined.

About that field: the analogy that comes to mind is an airplane in the process of boarding.

Economy class is growing full.

Meanwhile, there's plenty of room up in business and first class.

Will those seats be taken (Daniels, Christie, Huckabee, Palin), or does someone back in economy (Pawlenty?) get an upgrade?

great analogy...as we all know, the president flies in Air Force One...even though he has demonstrated that he is...classless.

Having read today's NRO piece on Herman Cain, I think he deserves a place. In fact, he may well end up in First Class, and then on to Air Force One.

1-4 above - meh.

The Alma Powell analogy is scary.I hope it's not because he would run as, as a , as a Republican?That wouldn't be a good thing to have in the White House a First Lady who wants her hubby to be popular with the beltway crowd.

And let me get this straight ...he took her back, and now she runs his career choices?

Someone (not me, I'm posted out...) should do a post examining how Democrat demonizing gets to Republican wives, thus further limiting choices for us.

My preference right now:

Ryan (not running)

Christie (not running)

Daniels (60% chance of running)

Cain (running)

Pawlenty

Everyone else. Running or not.

 I'm hopeful that Ryan can be talked into it. After that, I suppose its Pawlenty. Daniels looks great on paper but he can't 'sell it'. These last few months of watching Daniels reminded me of Obama's decision regarding troops in Afganistan. Is he gonna fish or cut bait?
