Spaniards have two last names, and under current law the first comes from the father and the second from the mother.

But a new bill presented to Parliament would let couples registering newborn babies put the mother's surname first.

If the couple does not specify an order or cannot agree on one, the names would be assigned in alphabetical order.

Ruling Socialist Party spokesman Jose Antonio Alonso told reporters Thursday there is no good reason for the father's name to come first automatically and the change will be more 'egalitarian.'

Opposition conservatives called the change an unnecessary reform no one is seeking and vowed to fight it in the legislature.

What next...planning on extirpating grammatical genders? Sorry, but Spanish has no "Neuter" like Germanic languages.

Diane Ellis, Ed.

Jeepers, first Spanish fathers are allowed to breast-feed, and now this? The only time Spain is in the news these days is when they pass some silly law to promote gender equality. You'd think they'd have their work cut out for them with their near 20% unemployment rate and their contracting GDP...

The birthrate among native Spaniards is so low that they ought to just go ahead and assign names to the remaining 457 Spanish babies that will ever be born.

Ha! Herb, brilliant!

Feminazi nonsense aside, this sort of thing always me as a geneological ponzi-scheme. Hyphenated names only work if there are really strict rules about how they are assigned. Otherwise you soon end up at Hernandez-Gonzalez-Cortez-Alvarado-Smith-Jones. Or else it is just arbitrary. And then what's the point?

Political correctnes gone wrong.

Here in Quebec we have had a law for about 25 years that says the woman MUST keep her own name when getting married. Sure she can legally change her name, but NOT for the purposes of getting married.

Quebec was once again confirmed as the shack-up captital of the world, just this week. It's also towards the top of the list in divorces, suicides and abortions. But gawddmmit, we take care of the important things in life and make sure we can be tracked from birth to death by your original name. ::sigh::

Silly stuff, but who cares? I still subscribe to "what's in a name", and have no issue with whatever the parents choose to call their kids, or whatever name a wife elects to use. The quality of the relationship is what counts.

Of course, they need these distractions because the green jobs market has completely collapsed with the US refusal to embrace Cap'n Trade....

Geez, the left really hates gender, doesn't it? It must be awful to wake up in the morning feeling like that.
