News Item: Obama's Job Approval Rises
President Barack Obama got more than rest and relaxation while he was on vacation in Hawaii over the holidays: His job approval rating, which had been languishing in the mid-40-percent range for more than six months, rose to 50 percent, according to Gallup Daily tracking.
The results are the average from tracking conducted Dec. 28-29 and Jan. 2, Gallup said.
Obama's rise in ratings comes after a particularly busy lame-duck session of Congress, which the president termed "a season of progress." Compromise was reached on extending the Bush-era tax cuts, Congress repealed the ban on gays serving openly in the military, and a measure was passed to pay for health benefits for rescue workers who became ill after working at Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The guy drops out of sight on vacation and his numbers rise. Go figure.

not a surprise...but he can't help opening his mouth...and when he does, they will start to go down again. He must use more cowbell...it's his raison d'etre.

I appreciate all his help with the 2010 US House elections. Couldn't have done it without him.

More cheerleading from Obama's partisans. Ho hum.
If he just goes on vacation for the rest of his term he'll be the most popular president ever!

With Republican identification now to historic levels of +5% over Democrats, what was the ratio in the sample of this Gallup poll?
Everyone needs to look sceptically at every poll for the next 2 years.
Re: News Item: Obama's Job Approval Rises
This is totally natural, and expected. He'll be above 50% or more for a while, I think. The key, for Obama, is for him to do nothing, nothing at all, and just...preside. He should map out a respectable middle course, pretend he's a "tempering" force on the "extreme" Republican congress, and coast to victory in 2012.
I don't think he'll be able to do it, though.

Re: News Item: Obama's Job Approval Rises
Rasmussen has him at 46%, with a minus-16% gap between strongly disapprove and strongly approve.
Given that the guy was at 41% approval on Gallup just a couple of months ago, I cannot believe he's lured back 9% of the electorate.
Re: News Item: Obama's Job Approval Rises
True, but my guess is -- and it's only a guess, that's all any of us have -- is that Obama's popularity is about as shallow as his unpopularity. I think a lot of Americans like the idea of having an African-American president, frankly. Just not a way liberal one. So I expect his popularity to increase in direct proportion to his total lack of activity.

And I think we have to factor that "African-American president" thing into the poll numbers. Strange as it might seem, some folks just cannot allow themselves to tell a pollster that they don't like the the First Black President.

Re: News Item: Obama's Job Approval Rises
Why are facts like.....
(A) Obama is half-white. .*Being for the most part white myself, I think that is wonderful, nothing wrong with that, I hope..
and
(B) Obama was raised by white folks, far outside the normal experience of most black folks in the USA (Hawaii, Indonesia, private schools, Columbia, Harvard).
(C) Obama's father was an African, one who came to this country freely (to study Marxism) not an African-American decendent of slaves....
ignored by everyone?
Only if we all ( black and white alike) are fixated solely on skin color.
It is pure fiction to associate Obama with ordinary African-Americans.
Obama is an elite, he is from a cushy, coddled past, unlike what most blacks in the USA experience, and he is, quite literally, a token.

Re: News Item: Obama's Job Approval Rises
The way to read this is that when Obama does nothing, we approve. When he agreed to extend the Bush tax cuts, we approved. This is as much a statement about us as it is about Obama.
It's kind of a game of "you're getting warmer, colder, or cold-cold-cold..."

Gallup is a poll of "adults" so you will see those kinds of swings as well as a 3 to 5 point bias in favor of the Democrats.

I totally agree, KC. And let's hope the president connects those dots, too.
