That's the headline on the front page of USA Today. How happy must Gov. Rick Perry be?

Compare that with the general public mood about the economy. The Washington Post reports that more than 1/3 of Americans believe President Obama is hurting the economy and that over half of Americans disapprove of his handling of jobs.

And here's Gallup:

Fifty-one percent of Americans rated current economic conditions “poor” over the weekend. This is up from 43% in early July, reflecting a continued deterioration in many Americans’ views.

Into this mix we have a President with an inexplicably secret plan to raise the debt ceiling who thinks that Americans are too stupid to understand what that phrase means.

I took President Obama's advice last night and called my member of Congress. But that's where I broke with the President. I took the opportunity to tell my member about my out-of-work family members and how we can't afford anything other than drastic cuts in spending. The Washington Post quotes a Montana woman whose husband drives 800 miles to work in North Dakota because there are no jobs in their town:

“If you keep throwing up the taxes and busting the guy who’s employing you, people are gonna lose jobs,” [Rose Bear, 52,] said. “They’re addressing the issue of the joblessness.”

I wonder how many of the calls deluging Congress right now are asking for an increase in the debt ceiling compared to what those of us with jobless family members who are sick of Congress and the President spending money like it doesn't mean a thing?

I feel bad that no one has yet commented, but that's because we're all scrambling to get to Texas.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

Yes, my family members are plotting their escape to that state right now, too!
