Did I say Muslims? I meant evangelicals and Mormons. This is utterly fascinating bigotry to read. We discussed yesterday the conspiracy theory about evangelical Christians whose adherents are called Dominionism-ists. It's a belief where we hype up the views of an unbelievably small group of people and then claim that everyone from Jack Kemp to Michele Bachmann have been under its sway and are to be feared.

Well, these conspiracy theorists are at the highest levels of the New York Times. This isn't surprising, of course. But it's still shocking to see the disgust with which it's communicated. Read it and weep.

Here's a sample of what Bill Keller, literally the executive editor of the New York Times, is writing today:

I honestly don’t care if Mitt Romney wears Mormon undergarments beneath his Gap skinny jeans, or if he believes that the stories of ancient American prophets were engraved on gold tablets and buried in upstate New York, or that Mormonism’s founding prophet practiced polygamy (which was disavowed by the church in 1890). Every faith has its baggage, and every faith holds beliefs that will seem bizarre to outsiders. I grew up believing that a priest could turn a bread wafer into the actual flesh of Christ.

My job at GetReligion requires me to analyze how well the mainstream media handles religion news. I read dozens upon dozens of stories each day. This is the first time in nearly six years that I've actually gasped when reading something. Partly that's because it's not coming from some small market columnist but the editor of one of the most important papers in the world.

If Bill Keller was waiting for the bread to magically turn into human skin ... someone should have explained the concept of sacrament to him.

See? This is what happens when there aren't enough nuns.Everyone talks about the lack of priests ... for the day to day life of the church, the lack of nuns is a worse problem.

I was born and raised Catholic, and I never believed that the priest could turn bread into flesh, even though the nuns told me that was what was happening.

But, I wonder if Keller would ask the same questions of a Muslim?  The question isn't whether Bachmann would have an issue appointing a Muslim to the bench, but how blindly a liberal might do so in the spirit of multiculturalism.

I ask again:  why are the left so worried about evangelical Christianity, when fundamentalist Islam is so much more morally objectionable to them?

NYT Keller piece is truly astonishing in its innuendo. And this from the man who ran the NYT when its news section neglected to report…

KC -- I've been taught by some outstanding nuns, but I can trace every misconception about my Catholic faith that I've ever held to a poorly informed nun who misled me & my classmates.

Once we were discussing the wearing of scapulars.  The nun was telling us we must wear them at all times so we would go straight to heaven if we were killed.  I remember asking her if Hitler would have gone straight to heaven if he'd had one around his neck at his death and she just turned red and screamed.  Something about "You are as bold as brass!  You must learn to be more taciturn."

Mollie -- yes, I  actually gasped when reading this.  Gross.

Why do you people read the Times anymore?  Seriously, don't you feel less informed having read it than when your day began?

Surely you can get information on the events of the day without the anti-Christian, anti-Republican slant of that rag.

Well, I don't.  But it's part of Mollie's job.  I just rely on others to pass on the most egregious stuff to raise my blood pressure.

I hate to be the jaded bad girl here out smoking by the fence but nothing Bill said shocked me. What would have shocked me is if he hadn't been an "ex-Catholic". Its become a pretty passe journalistic drill at the NYT and Boston Globe.

Both sound priests and sound nuns are important... priests are more so because they offer confession and the sacrifice of the mass - the literal life blood of the faithful.

WORLD VIEW!  Is this a difficult concept??  The world view of Keller and almost any person his organization would hire is secular humanism.  Man is god.  From his viewpoint any person who does not hold that belief is the "space alien".

Doctrinal issues important to Christians, whether Catholic sacramental or plain Baptist dogma are both foreign concepts which are rejected by his world view.  Why are we kidding ourselves with the idea that Keller and Co. will see anything from our viewpoint?

I was truly disappointed this morning watching Peter's Uncommon Knowledge when the guest expressed dismay at the reporters biases, as though they, like 100% of us, do not have a World View.  This can never be divorced from our perspective.

The myth of the objective reporter has been propagated over the last 75 years or so to maintain the fiction that what is, in effect, a propaganda machine, is actually the dispensing of objective truth.  Objectivity does not exist except in experimental science practiced by people committed to the experiment.  Else wise, we are always seeing through the gauze of the other person's world view.

Archbishop Chaput -- now in Philly -- has boycotted the paper for what he says is unfair treatment. I imagine the religion reporters there have been working overtime to get him to return their calls. This will set relations back decades, if there was ever any hope.

I do wonder if he's on to something ...

Ha ha !!

Our current dealings with nuns is just my personal experience --- others may have better tales to tell --- but it has been awful.   Extreme lefty politics, uber-feminism, and a complete failure to impart the tenets of the Catholic faith.  This was at a pricey, highly competitive regional h.s.
And don't get me started on those Jesuit commies......

The New York Times has become The Onion of print journalism - without the humor. It is rapidly approaching the beyond parody status of the National Enquirer. What helps make it so funny is that they don't realize it.

You can thank the 60's for that one. While there are some exceptions, the overall experience you report has been pretty consistent across most of North America. CG Jung, Centering Prayer, Wymyn priests.....(yawn).

You can pretty much measure a person's love of socialism by their hatred for God. It always seems to go hand in hand.

"But I do want to know if a candidate places fealty to the Bible..."

Fealty?   When Keller was Catholic he saw his relationship with Christ as that of feudal lord and indentured servant?

No wonder he abandoned his relationship with Jesus.  He never really had one to begin with.

I'm comforted that you track this stuff from the media, Mollie.

The NYT recognizes but one religion, and that is Gaianism.  All others are heretics, to be burned in effigy over Paul Krugman's backyard grill.

Keller says, "This year’s Republican primary season offers us an important opportunity to confront our scruples about the privacy of faith in public life — and to get over them."

Get over scruples?  Really?  He thinks that would be a good thing?

Does the NYTimes even have scruples?

The mind boggles.
