ricochet.crying.north.koreans

As MSNBC reports on its web site, according to the S. Korea- based Daily NK newspaper, North Korea is punishing citizens who didn’t cry during the orchestrated public mourning over the death of Kim Jong Il, sentencing them to six months in a labor-training camp.

I guess lots of us suspected that most of the crying was fake. Now we know.

How sad.  N. Korean life must be very similar to Orwell's 1984.

Apparently, even North Korean bears wept upon hearing the news of Dear Leader's passing.

Assuming Obama loses in November, but sure not to celebrate too much in DC before the new guy takes over.

The only way I would've cried is if I'd twisted my ankle while dancing and jumping for joy.

Looks like the new boss is the same as the old boss in that psychotic state.

Man that totalitarianism is a hard hustle!

I've never cried at a movie.  I'd be in real trouble were I a North Korean.

It's even worse. Those whose crying didn't seem sincere enough were also given six months in a labour/reeducation camp.

Faking it was no guarantee that one would escape punishment.

Funny you mention this. Christopher Hitchens makes the same claim in this Fora TV speech.

I bet this a kind of ploy by their leadership to counteract what everyone in the media(and outside it) that the crying was fake.  If they punish my people that were fake crying then that surely means that some were being genuine in their "love" of their departed dear leader right?(Of course the answer is no)

I know Misthiocracy. I'm 6'5" 225 too. Pretty pitiful. I suppose that movie hit some notes regarding very painful dementia scenarios I've dealt with. Still, man card to the re-education camp is better than the whole tamale. Furthermore, for every "Notebook" one night with the wife their is a "Planet Terror" the next.

Can we just forget these people once and for all ? Let the Chinese deal with them. It is the Chinese and the Russians who allow them to exist, who armed them in the war,

As long as the regime and the Nork news media continues to be bugnuts insane, they'll be newsworthy.

How can we simply ignore a regime that releases official reports of weeping bears?!

It's always big powerful dudes like you who inside are sensitive.  Men are like dogs.  My 8 pound toy fox terrior chases every pit bull she sees, any of whom could turn and do her in with one bite.

Hey, sensitivity is one thing.  Male crying is fine (I'm a waterworks when I want to be).

BUT THE NOTEBOOK?!?!

Even I have my limits!

If anyone's interested, I just read a good book which will give you an understanding of what those poor people have in store for them at the hard labor camps.  The book is The Aquariums of Pyongyang: Ten Years in the North Korea Gulag by Kang Chol-Hwan.  Kang was sent to a labor camp with his family when he was nine years old in 1977.  He later escaped the Hermit Kingdom and is now a journalist in Seoul.

While Aquariums doesn't have the masterly scope or style of Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago, it's a damning account of the relentless brutality occurring in North Korea.  And as bad as the conditions are related in the book, it's important to remember that those events took place before the current government-caused famine took hold.

Not trying to be a wet blanket, but I lost my taste for making jokes about North Korea after reading Aquariums.
