My New Favorite Word: "Vuca"
The Zeitguide keeps track of these things so you don't have to. There's a neologism emerging, and I think it's pretty good. From Zeitguide:
ADD VUCA —volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity—to SNAFU and FUBAR as the latest military acronym to work its way into the civilian vocabulary. It’s in vogue particularly among business leaders, and given the fiscal cliff, the euro crisis, shrinking Chinese GDP, flash stock crashes, and DOA IPOs, it’s easy to see why.
Problem is, there’s no VUCA operating template. The only consistent corporate behavior we’ve seen: hunkering down, reflected in a hesitation to invest, hire, or buy into anything. But hemming and hawing doesn’t help the bottom line, either. As Winston Churchill noted: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.”
I like VUCA. I don't like the way it sounds, but I'll get used to it. Just as I'll get used to a world that's a lot more vuca than ever.

I was thinking of Rob just the other day as I set up my Blu-Ray player to get streaming video from Amazon.com (and, soon, from Netflix as well). The near future is certainly volatile and uncertain for people in television.

Creating FUD (Fear Uncertainty Doubt) was the goal of IBM marketing engineers if they sensed that the customer was considering going to another vendor. What might happen if they strayed from the Blue strait and narrow, where you could be sure of what you'd get, even if you didn't like it?
