Today I randomly bumped into fellow Ricochet member Roberto. I was sitting in a Starbucks, just getting into my Latin studies, when out of the corner of my eye I catch a glimpse of his computer screen and noticed the distinct Ricochet layout and Claire Berlinski's avatar. Then I leaned over and asked if he was a member and introduced myself.

We talked a bit about how we discovered Ricochet and why we liked the site. We also discussed the GOP field and shared our analyses of most of the candidates. I have to say that the Ricochet community is a cut above your average American. Someone should do a study on how much more likely you are to have an intelligent, substantive discussion on just about any issue with a fellow Ricocheter.

I hope you guys encourage Roberto to post more often because he's a smart guy with good material to share but he's holding out on us. Such a random occurrence was quite a surprise but it goes to show it's a small world.

I wish I could recall how I found Ricochet. I just remember I was listening to the podcast before the site went live. Probably I found it through Peter's Uncommon Knowledge.

Lucky you got a glimpse of his screen, how likely was that! A one in (?) shot. Imagine if one in a hundred Americans were Ricocheters (Delingpole's designation). Or one in ten. Our influence would decide elections. Government would shrink, public spending would plummet, prosperity would blossom. Peter could divide his time between allocating his billions to charity and overseeing a Pentagon-size think tank. Rob would helm an entertainment industry worthy of the name when he wasn't recharging his batteries on his personal freighter. Firefly would be back on television and would win an Emmy every year.

Who said conservatives aren't utopian? Seriously though, what a fluky, fortunate meeting.

Very nice indeed. Best way I can think of to meet.

Tell Roberto to get an avatar.

(Severely: I definitely want a few more seasons of Firefly, too. What a great thing to see in a comment here. It's the greatest SciFi series ever.)

Especially what were the odds of his finding another conservative there.

Don't evade it:  WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN Starbucks?  Don't you know the place is lousy with Liberal Fascists?

Now repeat three times:  Ricochet-conservative.  Starbucks-liberal.

"I have to say that the Ricochet community is a cut above your average American."

My experience exactly, Bereket.

But don't think I'm going to let you off the hook just because you put up this marvelous post.  I still want you to post that recipe for Cajun/Ethiopian spice you're planning to use to cook tomorrow.

Grendel, it's like what Maj. Winters said in Band of Brothers: "We're paratroopers Lieutenant. We're supposed to be surrounded." Peter, I am now off the hook if you'll take a look at the member feed. I just remembered that I will be in Sunnyvale on Friday so if everything turns out well maybe you can try it out for yourself. Have you tried Ethiopian food, by the way? George can fill you in on what you're missing.

Seriously? The idea that the Ricochet layout and the sight of my avatar is kind of like a secret handshake among the polite, intelligent and substantive is making me kind of giddy.

I'm really glad now that I switched from the orange photo. I would have hated for that to be my legacy.

Black-and-white? I can't remember--do you mean the really old PR photos of me that are still circulating on the Web? Well, nothing's bringing back that splendor in the grass. Grieve not!

You think that's cool?, check this out!  My 9-year-old said to me yesterday, "Mommy, when I grow up and get a Ricochet account, I'm going to make my avatar a picture of Honey."  I kid you not. We're nurturing the next generation!

And just so you recognize the young Chauvinist when she arrives, here's Honey:

Well, the photo I'm remembering (or hallucinating) was your Ricochet avatar immediately prior to the one you have now. (It definitely wasn't a picture of you with blond hair.) It was more like one of these pictures. Anyhow I thought it a very beautiful picture -- and I thought it was black and white (perhaps sepia toned?).

What was the orange photo anyhow? Inquiring minds want to know.

I can't find it now, but just sort of mentally merge the photo you see with a pumpkin (in honor of the day) and you'll get the idea. Something went off with the color. It didn't bother me until I looked at it a few times too many and felt that a speaking pumpkin didn't befit the dignity of Ricochet.

I don't remember a black-and-white photo (but thank you for hallucinating a lovely one).

It's my favorite too. I'll probably beat this drum until I die, but I'd be happy if Whedon revived it in ten or thirty years. The characters are priceless and I thought the casting was inspired.

Now, that is clever, Jimmy -- and subtle, too.
