Must-reading on ObamaCare
It's not about jobs, it's about freedom. It's not about the economy, it's about if you'll ever be able to find a doctor to put your interests ahead of his paymasters', and whether choices you don't want are choices at all.
At least the lawyers will have a field day with all the hospitals that turn away the chronic patients because the government paymasters won't compensate for return visits - perhaps that should be "free" too.
Our authoritarians are fast moving to creating a hell of a mess, and people will pay for it with their lives. Must reading.

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
Natalie, I know you weren't looking for sympathy but you have that from me as well as prayers for your man and your family.
Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
Natalie, you have all our prayers & sympathy. I hope you'll write letters to your local paper this week and next, as we are in for a barrage of coordinated spin from the WH and 100+ left-wing groups singing the praises of ObamaCare. Your voice of experience should be heard loud and clear above it all.

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
Not all, but most of Obamacare was passed using what our betters in Congress call, “reconciliation.” It’s a procedure used for budget matters and the Democrats thought they had really outsmarted Republicans (never difficult to do) since by this little trick the House version did not have to go to a full Senate vote requiring 60 votes to avoid a filibuster. Scott Brown was in the Senate by then and had promised to be the 41st vote to sustain a filibuster which would have stopped Obamacare in its tracks.
But what passes with reconciliation can be repealed by reconciliation. Thus, if the Republicans get even a slim majority in the Senate, keep the House, and if we have a President willing to support it and sign the bill, Obamacare, or most of it, can be repealed by a simple majority in the Senate. If the Republicans fail in this they should lose every future election.
Romney cannot be trusted to stand up to the winds that will blow then. Santorum is the best choice for president even if the only good thing about him is that he will support repeal and he will sign the bill.

On repealing Obamacare by reconciliation see The Reconciliation Option by James Capretta.

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
I think I have said before that acronyms can be hazardous to your health. ACOs are just the latest attempt at statist control of human activity but unfortunately more fundamentally affect life and death activity. Singers' analysis seems spot on to me. Tabula Rasa is right that the environment will become a perfect storm of bankrupting litigation because now all of the financial incentives work against the patients' interest.

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
The problems facing physicians did not start with ObamaCare, although it is an unsurprising step on the road to socialized medicine.
Physicians have done this to themselves.
A generation ago they gladly gave up control of their profession for the convenience of capatative payments. The ensuing regulatory controls, over the years, has driven a wedge between the doctor and the patient.
ObamaCare may go away. But even if it does, we have a nation full of physicians who do not know how to practice without some entity holding their hand.

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
Heather and Docjay-Thanks for your prayers. I am doing my best to make people aware of what they can look foreward to if Obamacare isn't repealed. The weirdest response I've had so far to my arguements where I've told our story was, "Well, what do you expect for free?" It's difficult to have meaningful debate when you go up against such a large group that share a mentallity like that one.

Obamacare will go away but it may not be until we crawl out from under the wreckage of a storm that will make the Great Depression look like a summer squall. Physicians are no more to blame than anyone else who has suckled at this shriveled teat.

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
Well Duke Powell, I exist with no insurance payments and actually know what I'm worth. The fact that some archaic law prevents physician organization for collective bargaining allows insurers and hospitals to pick us off like straggling wildebeest. I predict a large strike at some point by the way but it will be loosely organized.

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
While a very small number of physicians have done what you have done Doctor, collectively you guys just don't have the guts to confront the payors. Your profession has had 30 years..
I would love for you to prove me wrong.

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
Always happy to do what I can for groups who are out there fighting the good fight. Being DC based, (actually just up Wisconsin Ave in MD, with its Obama-in-training governor O'Malley) I will make an effort to show my face at at least one gathering. Your group is welcome to email me any time!

Re: Must-reading on ObamaCare
Well Duke, I doubt physicians will do anything until the majority are highly offended but you will see certain specialties revolting and more critically, certain geographic areas fighting and others that have already sold out(California, Mass). The latest players attempting to be in control are the hospitals attempting their own ACO's and field of specialists. We do have power though and you may see something interesting come up as our autonomy is flushed in favor of the flowchart and the mandate.
