Haaretz is reporting that thirteen people were killed last night in clashes between Muslims and Christians in Cairo. About 140 people are reported injured. The violence erupted as a result of the torching by Muslims of a church in Helwan, south of Cairo, an attack that evokes the New Year's Eve attack on the Coptic cathedral in Alexandria.

Petrol bombs and rocks were hurled during last night's clash and at least one person was shot in the back. The army dispersed the rioters by firing rounds into the air.

Also yesterday, Islamists protested outside the prime minister's office over the case of two women they claim are being forcibly detained in churches after converting to Islam.

Now is the time for those ever-elusive moderate Muslims to step forward and criticize the murderous zeal of co-religionists. Or at the very least call for, um, let's see -- I know! -- "dialogue." Look to the horizon for the dust of the unicorns they will ride in on.

For Muslims that are willing to kill Christians, moderation is surrender, and surrender is treason. "Moderates" risk the same fate as the Copts.

"If the world hate you, know that it has hated me before you." -- Jesus to his disciples.

Can we expect otherwise whether it be at NPR or in Cairo?
