Mubarak's Speech: A Public-Speaking Phobic's Worst Nightmare

You know who I'm really glad not to be right now? Hosni Mubarak.
They say speaking in public is one of the most common human phobias. It's not one I suffer from, as I'm sure you've all noticed. I'm just lucky that way. But for those who do, I suggest you not even watch that scene. That's really the worst-case scenario.

He could hardly bear even to make eye contact with the camera.
Then again, his audience was not exactly supportive.

He said he would die on Egyptian soil. How many in the audience were planning just that?

Perhaps he has seen, "The King's Speech", and was auditioning for a new role?

At the conclusion of the speech, Mubarak was still breathing. I imagine there were lots of worse scenarios that would have resulted in a different ending!
(I am mildly terrified of public speaking, so I have imagined worse endings to a public speech. None of them involved Hosni Mubarak.)

Where was he when they riddled Anwar Sadat with bullets ? And what was their connection to the Brotherhood ? Talk about long range planning...

Two thoughts:
(1) At times like this I really miss Baghdad Bob;
(2) He could have added a little spice by winking at us;

I don't think it is so much a fear of public speaking, but a fear that his countrymen may have grown bored with this whole effigy thing.

It is one thing for the local librarian to be uncomfortable speaking in public and something else for a guy who's been President for Life for the last gazillion years. Is the US to blame for coddling him? Is the Arab world to blame for being full of maniacs who can be rightly blamed for mayhem if democracy breaks out? Perhaps a tad in both cases but ultimately the people of Egypt have to take the blame so lets hope it is good that they are finally not going to permit it anymore. What they do wind up permitting could well be the next problem but the fork is clearly sticking in this guy and he's been done way too long.
