Mr. Colbert goes to Washington.

After making light of immigration and labor issues on his show "The Colbert Report," Stephen Colbert has been asked to testify on the Hill today before a House subcommittee on immigration--in character!--as an "expert" witness. Suffice it to say that Fox News, and Republicans on the Hill, are not happy.
Sure, it's a poor use of Congress' time and taxpayer money--and it makes a mockery of our leaders in Washington--but if you've ever sat in on committee hearings, and I have, then you'll know that about 99% of them are pointless wastes of time. Hopefully this one won't also be boring.

Re: Mr. Colbert goes to Washington.
The opiate of the dis-elected. I heartily endorse Congress spending time interviewing Colbert. Also, I encourage Obama to take more vacations. Perhaps, during the lame duck session, they can bring back Elmo to testify about Katie Perry's cleavage. And redecorate the minority offices. What we really want from this Congress is masterly inactivity.

I get the message "This video contains content from FOX news network, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds." Is our contributor Rupert Murdoch around? I'd be fascinated to learn the background to this message.

Interesting Claire. If you can't get that clip, try the one here (scroll down). It's more fun, anyway.

Nothing better illustrates the vacuousness, narcissism, and delusional cognitive disconnect between our so-called 'leaders' and our fellow citizens.
If this doesn't wake up the sleepers among us, nothing will.
Re: Mr. Colbert goes to Washington.
Kennedy, I couldn't agree more.
According to the Fox News clip in my original post, the subcommittee on immigration that Colbert is appearing before this morning (right now, actually, as I type this!) has not even had a hearing on immigration in the last year and a half--despite it being a huge news item. And now that they finally do, they invite Colbert as their expert witness! It's such great theater--farce, really.

Re: Mr. Colbert goes to Washington.
Republicans on the committee should react by laughing hysterically at everything he says. Act as if the man is hilarious, slap knees, crack up uncontrollably....

As Allahpundit speculates, it's a sign that the Dems have just given up. Not even trying any more. Rob may need to update the Grief Status for this development.
Humor can be a potent weapon, wielded properly. But somehow I don't think the Rally to Restore Sanity is much of a threat, as far as moving people to vote. "That was fun, what's for dinner?" will be the main reaction.

I don't understand the problem. Aren't the jokers in the raised leather chairs who run these kind of hearings always in character?

I disagree. This is a campaign move. The Dems are going to laugh at all his jokes, make some jokes of their own, clap in agreement occasionally, and basically try to seem cool and agreeable to Colbert's fans.

Really painful to watch: no one was laughing. Especially not the Democrats:

I too beg to differ. Jokers and hysterics have been allowed to make mockery of Congressional hearings for years. Lamb Chop, e.g., testified on TV programming, one of the Backstreet Boys on coal and water regulations, Kim Basinger on circus animals, Justine Bateman opined on Net Neutrality and, let's not forge that great thespian Meryl Street and alar. Her spurious claim unleashed panic among parents and schools, destroyed the livelihood of 20,000 apple growers, caused citrus fruit to rot, not that alar was ever used on citrus, but growers could not sell it anyway, with Congress doing nothing to spread the malevolent, unjust campaign.
So as far as I can tell, Colbert is just another name in the long gallery of rogues and non-entities entertaining our political masters

Re: Mr. Colbert goes to Washington.
I listened to Rush give his take on this, and he got it right. Mockery is a preferred strategy of modern Democrats. The point of this was to undercut Republican arguments by portraying them as ridiculous before they could even be voiced. Democrats don't argue. They bully and dismiss.

And no Tea Partiers ever invited for their testimony?
