More Marco

Marco Rubio, when asked about the politics of budget cuts--and here I quote once again from the notes I made in Washington earlier this week:
Yes, I know. There are those who say that if we confront the entitlement programs we'll lose the next election. But if we don't confront the entitlement programs we'll lose our country.

Re: More Marco
Now that's conviction I could vote for.
I think Americans are starving for such conviction and leadership.

Re: More Marco
Nothing will happen without democrat bipartisan support this year and next year.
So it's okay to propose serious reforms and let people decide in 2012 if they want to save the country from becoming greece or go all Democrat and raise taxes including VAT.

Re: More Marco
Now Rubio just has to reverse his previous statement about not being interested in running for President or Vice-President and perhaps place a personal call to Kenneth to apologize for his rash statement about Arizona's anti-immigration statute, then he's a shoe-in.

Re: More Marco
Christie-Rubio would be a formidable ticket as would Ryan-Rubio which has even better alliteration. Only problem right now is that both Christie and Rubio have said they're not running.
Peter - Why don't you believe them? Do you really think they're just playing hard to get?

Re: More Marco
What amazes me is that people are ready to throw him in the ring after vetting his convictions and abilities through that political gauntlet we call a dinner engagement. Maybe I'm not Rubio-literate right now, but he seems to me to be a Republican version of 2007 Barack Obama. Putting politicians in roles that they're not ready for seems like bad news.

Re: More Marco
I think the only Republican version of Barack Obama was probably Charlie Crist who Rubio soundly beat but I understand what you're saying - that he's relatively new on the scene and we don't know him enough. However, there is a lot of video on Rubio that you can view on YouTube most of which positions him very well for a VP slot. Typically VP candidates aren't that well known to the general American populace. What is known about Rubio is on the whole quite impressive and I think the Democrat Party would prefer not to see Rubio on the ticket at all.

No, Rubio earned his street creds when he was Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. There, he helped push through a major change in the Florida tax code. He's actually done something instead of just voting "present."

Re: More Marco
Senator Rubio seems to have a knack for pithy yet persuasive and substantive sound bites, his rash statement on the AZ immigration law Brian W. refers to (and immediately backed away from) notwithstanding.

That's what I'd be looking for, but it doesn't seem like any of the talk either here on or the television is concerned too much on his substance, but his style. And that bothers me.
Was this statement really worth another thread? I get scared when people start fawning over politicians.

Re: More Marco
Some additional observations about Marco (Floridians refer to him on a first-name basis):
- Not unlike Giuliani, he's a bonafide policy wonk. He's comfortable in debates and interviews and with public speaking because he knows of what he speaks.
- Also (again, similar to the Mayor), Marco refuses to accede talking points to the media. If you've ever watched him in an interview, he owns the exchange. This man has cojones.

Re: More Marco
Washington, DC, is the epicenter of the let's-don't-and-say-we-did culture. When the going gets tough, declare victory and dance on. Obama's devastatingly evil budget proposal, announced to "cease adding to the deficit in five years" while taking that five ton anchor we call debt service off budget. Nothing up his sleeve, no siree bob. In fact, the whole suit is empty!
If I could ignore almost a trillion dollars in annual debt service, call it $8T over a 7 year budget as long as somebody thinks we'll ever pay it back, I'm sure I would too. Obviously not a lot of rocket scientists in those Chicago communities he cut his teeth advising.

Re: More Marco
Rubio is showing spine that a number of other Republicans seem to lack. Perhaps he understands that taking decisive action in the Nation's best interest actually wins elections.

Yeah, if he had Gadhaffi's sartorial flare.
Re: More Marco
Nobody ought to take the demurral about running for higher office seriously, I don't think, Brian--at just 39, and having spent a grand total of eight weeks in the Senate, Rubio more or less has to demur.
But a phone call to Kenneth? Totally necessary.
