I'm sooo jealous. You've no idea how jealous. Dr Michael Mann - inventor of the discredited Hockey Stick, junk scientist extraordinaire, onlie true begetter of Mann-made global warming - is suing Mark Steyn for defamation, not me.

Dr Mann chose to announce it on Facebook:

I have formally demanded a retraction of, and apology for, this defamatory piece about me by National Review. I have retained counsel to pursue my legal rights.

Here's the link to the "defamatory" piece, which you can still read online - 11 days after it was published - at the NRO site. This suggests that NRO's lawyers aren't taking it quite as seriously as Mann is.

And here - thanks for reminding me, Watts Up With That? - is another thing Mann tried unsuccessfully to have taken down from the internet.

I really don't know why Mann keeps on fighting it. Surely he must realize that ever since the Climategate emails were published he was always going to have difficulty being taken seriously ever again. Better to go with the flow, I say, and let nature take its course. Mann should abandon all pretence at being a scientist and concentrate on his burgeoning career as a comedy figure. I see a bright future ahead of him. Why, if this goes on, he could become a legend to rival the great Fatty Arbuckle.

I've got to think this was intended solely to get the headline that he just got.  He'd have to be an I.D.I.O.T. to actually file a lawsuit.

Based on what I know about American defamation law, he's a public figure and would have to prove "actual malice."  Not a chance.

Mollie is right.  First, he's quoting someone else, and what he does write is nothing that James Delingpole and hundreds of other writers haven't said over and over.

If I'm going to pick a public fight with someone it wouldn't be Mark Steyn.

James, are you insinuating that Mann will be charged for manslaughter? He just might sue you for that one.

Even if the defamation were proved, Mr. Mann has to prove the damage the alleged defamation did to his reputation.  Reputation?

How about this from three years ago?  This is his reputation: http://govtricks.blogspot.com/2009/12/for-climategate-deniers.html

Mark Steyn should counter sue and force Mann to prove out his data in court.

Will Lord:  He is quoted in the Independent newspaper as claiming to be a reluctant public figure.

So reluctant indeed that he awards himself himself the title "Public Figure" on his own Facebook page right underneath his handsome photo.

Is it possible in the English language to utter anything more pompous and fatuous than " I have retained counsel to pursue my legal rights." ?

James, your comments are not fair -- to Fatty Arbuckle.

Bryan G. Stephens: Buck up James.  I know it is hard, but we should celebrate the victories of our friends.

We need a Delingpole/Steyn Pod Cast! Maybe proximity will help get you in the trouble with the right people. · 5 hours ago

Absolutely second that motion.

I think, at best, this suit will rehash the whole Hockey stick fraud issue reminding everyone of his shenanigans, but he also runs the risk of becoming the "Jerry Sandusky of climate science" with a much larger audience.  I say go for it Michael!

Fatty Arbuckle was acquitted after two mistrials. Apparently the victim of prosecutorial abuse.

Another liberal releasing the lawyers to do their worst.  This post on Ricochet will no doubt dub you a co-conspirator with fellow agitator Steyn, and you will be named in the lawsuit.

Oh my.  I've incriminated myself as well!

That being said, Mann is no man.

I've worked out the true cause of global warming.

It's the endless bloviation from warmistas like Mann.

In order to Save The Planet (tm), we just need to get them to shut up.

Guruforhire: 1. The best I can tell this threatened lawsuit meets the criteria for vexatious and frivilous.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.: What's so funny about this is that Steyn is quoting someone else. I assume it's the Rand Simberg comments that are bothering Mann, right? Not Steyn's funny take on them. · Jul 26 at 5:55am

I was also puzzled by his going after Steyn and not Rand Simberg who made the comparison with Sandusky.  I could only conclude he was stung by Steyn's calling him "the very ringmaster of the tree-ring circus."  It gave me a big laugh and I expect it will not be forgotten.

Posted on Michael E. Mann's Facebook page, Thursday Aug. 23:

"... statement from my lawyer ...:

'The response of the National Review is telling with respect to the issues it did not address. It did not address, or even acknowledge, the fact that Dr. Mann’s research has been extensively reviewed by a number of independent parties, ... with never a suggestion of any fraud or research misconduct ... the fact that Dr. Mann’s conclusions have been replicated by no fewer than twelve independent studies. It did not deny the fact that it was aware that Dr. Mann has been repeatedly exonerated of any fraudulent conduct... that it knew its allegations of fraud were false. Rather, the National Review’s defense seems to be that it did not really mean what it said last month when it accused Dr. Mann of fraud. Beyond this, the response is little more than an invective filled personal attack on Dr. Mann. And further, this attack is coupled with the transparent threat that the National Review intends to undertake burdensome and abusive litigation tactics should Dr. Mann have the temerity to attempt to defend himself in court.'

We intend to file a lawsuit."
