More Junk Science: Study Shows Women Better at Parking than Men
I'll believe the globe is warming before I believe this, from MSNBC.com:
Covert surveillance of car parks across the United Kingdom shows that, while women may take longer to park, they are more adept than men at maneuvering into a parking space, and when they park they are more likely to leave their vehicles in the middle of a parking bay.
The month-long study, conducted by the U.K.’s National Car Parks, was carried out amongst 2,500 drivers and looked at various aspects of parking -- including technique, accuracy and time taken to park -- in order to produce a “parking coefficient” -- an overall score of how well a driver parks.
The overall score for women drivers was higher than for male drivers. Women also fared better when it came to finding empty spaces, were more accurate in lining themselves up before starting a parking maneuver, and were more likely to use a driving instructor’s favored method of reversing into a parking spot.
Simply not possible. Anecdotal evidence, collected over 45 years, proves otherwise. The full report is here, though I'm not going to bother to read it. I know the truth.

My limousine driver says I'm the best parker he's ever seen.

Imagine what all the equipment and man-power that went into that study could have done if it weren't being used for that study...

Re: More Junk Science: Study Shows Women Better at Parking than Men
The study was in the UK, where they drive backwards. Everything is upside down there! Cats chase dogs, criminals arrest cops, and women park better.
All I know is that on the west coast, no one parks well. Except me. I'm clearly the greatest parkmeister by far.

I agree with the "junk science" report. And my anecdotal evidence consists of this:
I am incontrovertibility superior at a) finding parking spots in San Francisco, and b) parking in them than the soon-to-be Mr. Diane Ellis (and no, I'm not actually making him take my name) .

Re: More Junk Science: Study Shows Women Better at Parking than Men
Why exactly is "finding empty spaces" considered to be a skill? Are they refering to those women (usually) who sit in the middle of a lane waiting for a "close" slot to be vacated in a half-full parking lot, blocking 4-6 cars behind her in the interim? I wasn't thinking of that as a "skill," just an example of being spatially and situationally unaware.

Clearly, this can only be settled with a Park-Off.

Parking is clearly best done by a man and a woman.
Stupid, pointy-headed, social scientists...

NCP, the outfit that commissioned the study, is run by a woman. Clearly, she thinks that parking with one tire on the sidewalk is proper, and graded the subjects accordingly.

There is absolutely no way this is correct. No offense to our lovely women here, but there is simply no way.

Considering matters in the UK currently I imagine the funds would have gone directly to the account of the appropriate Global Warming drum beater, I look at this report and see a bullet dodged.
Plus everyone knows cats trump all others in the matter of parking, silly researchers.

Perhaps comparing insurance claims data would validate the study.

I drive a Dodge 1 ton 3500 megacab diesel (compensating eh?) and
all non parallel parking spots are backed in to to avoid being trapped. My athletic and talented wife cannot do this spatial exercise at all.

Mr. Charlotte achieved this parking miracle recently (he was so pleased with himself that he posted it on Facebook). There is no way I could replicate this feat in a million years.

Re: More Junk Science: Study Shows Women Better at Parking than Men
Driving and parking are two different skills. I can go along with the idea that women have safer driving records, but specifically parking, how many times have us men had to take over this task? If Russia is any guide, women can't even drive in reverse properly nor drive through narrow areas because they think they can't fit through. Though American women drivers are better than Russian women, the contrast in skills can be extrapolated quite easily to a general rule.

Re: More Junk Science: Study Shows Women Better at Parking than Men
There are more things than I could mention that my wife is better at then me. Parking is most definitely NOT included in that list. Nowhere close. Yes this is purely anecdotal. And that study was obviously conducted by crack smoking, Guiness swilling, Mini driving monkeys.
