Courtesy of the fabulous Ann Althouse, who is blogging on the Wisconsin demonstrations from her home in Madison, comes this old footage of Governor Ronald Reagan reacting to demonstrations at Berkeley. The Gipper comes on about 1:20 into the video.

I recall watching William F. Buckley interview Allen Ginsberg on Firing Line and it was quite hilarious. No doubt Ginsberg's followers were impressed with his eschewal of reason but with the benefit of years I expect it would be clear that this was a carnival act designed to avoid genuine argument. It was clear to me at the time. I take heart in the fact that I and many people my age...probably pre-teens at the time of this video - liked the music but did not adopt the politics. Today I see young men who are at once part of the popular culture but also more than willing to serve their country and who plan a life of bourgeois capitalism that would make Allen Ginsberg...well...Howl.

I tried for about five minutes to come up with a comment that would express what I wanted to do to those protesters without violating the ricochet code of conduct. I came up empty.
