More From Florida: The Newt and Jorge Show

Newt, interviewed earlier today on Univision (his interlocutor is Jorge Ramos, the Spanish-language equivalent, roughly, of Walter Cronkite or Dan Rather):
Self-deportation, "an Obama-level fantasy." Hm. Ann Coulter? Good people of Ricochet? What think?

Re: More From Florida: The Newt and Jorge Show
Its certainly an effective rebuttal in the format that he's been given. Can he pull the reversal on stage live during a debate? If he does, and does it effectively, Battleship Mitt takes a hit but then Destroyer Rubio is riding his flank....

Can we ask any candidate about self deprecation. I really like the phrase Obama level fantasy and it does seem to fit here.

A nice twofer.
Re: More From Florida: The Newt and Jorge Show
This is one of the questions where Romney has been a bit of a demagogue. I wish that he would stop pandering.

Unless one of these guys can step up and start looking presidential, I'm going to self-deport!

Re: More From Florida: The Newt and Jorge Show
Mitt's been an English language and immigration restrictionist since 1994, including in the 2002 campaign. How on earth is it pandering to hold an unpopular viewpoint (in the state he was campaigning and governing in) and be open and public about it?

Romney rebuttal:
"Your moonbase alpha you announced today is an Obama level fantasy. Perhaps after you've chased Khan around the mutare nebula, you can wave at Buzz Lightyear while you do a victory lap."

Re: More From Florida: The Newt and Jorge Show
Wow, and people say that Romney will say anything to get elected!
I like how Newt blows smoke up the host's skirt and then proceeds to take another swipe at capitalism by claiming Mitt makes his money "without work". He then drags out that one poor illegal granny to say it's so cruel to deport people that we just can't do it.
How big of a fantasy is a Moon base?
Bob Tyrell is right, this guy is a tireless hustler...

My favorite line: "This is not an issue I took up last Tuesday."

Aw, you're telling me that Romney is a Star Trek fan? Or that he's pandering to them?

Also, why not a moonbase?

Re: More From Florida: The Newt and Jorge Show
In a matter of 2 minutes he attacks Romney personally with class warfare rhetoric, plays the Rick Perry "heartless" card, and then avoids giving any kind of specific proposal by calling for one of his patented " national conversations". And did he really need to name drop Reagan for ten thousandth time?

4 thoughts:
Newt's been coming out with this stuff (immigration enforcement as lacking humanity, compared with Newt having supported amnesty) over Spanish language airwaves all week via ads and surrogates. I do think mildly better of him for having the balls to eventually imitate Perry's "heartless" comment in English, even if it is still on Univision, but it's a classic example of how Newt's attacks on his rivals, now and in the 1990s, tend to promote Newt and hurt the party.
There's a ton of Republicans who believe in enforcing immigration law in districts with large numbers of immigrants who will hear Newt speaking again when the Democrats run ads against them in the general.
Peter, you know Mark Krikorian personally? You must have heard him using the phrase in the past, and breaking out statistics on it?
Newt's right that Grandmothers whose daughters were born in the US aren't going to be deported, assuming they're not criminals or otherwise of "bad character". Mitt doesn't want to see them deported either, so far as I know. He's not proposed a reform to the law..Again, Newt revives anti-Republican smears.

Re: More From Florida: The Newt and Jorge Show
This is Newt at his most unattractive.
But as for the issue of self-deportation, of course it would work if we secured the border and enforced the laws against hiring illegals.
But the Democrats won't do it because they want new voters and the Republicans won't do it because they're afraid of seeming racist.

Re: More From Florida: The Newt and Jorge Show
I'm gonna watch this, but what you should know is the immigration topic, as pounded on the spanish stations, is specifically what Rubio has spoken out against, with respect to Newt. He says that Gingrich's and Romney's positions over time have been essentially identical and he says it in spanish.
Believe me, Rubio saying this guy is blowing smoke will have an impact.
Not all hispancs ally with Rubio, but all will lean towards him against gringos that, essentially, seem like a toss-up.
Wow. Just watched it. The level of deceit and pandering that I just observed is too much, even for my cynical self. That is not a person that has in any way reformed his character. That's a bald-faced liar that never fears to meet his maker.
I vote next Tuesday and I lean towards... no one.
In four decades of voting, I honestly feel that none of these people earn my vote, even as a manager, much less as remotely representative of me. There is nobody left in this primary that I will leave my house and cast a ballot for.

Maybe this will work. But more likely Newt will counter that he would admit that it is a John Kennedy-level fantasy. Only much cheaper and more sustainable in the long run because of the role of private enterprise.
The main thing I'm not keen about in this proposal is his open-ended talk of "prizes". Without specifics that could be seriously problematic, and may amount to Obama-level choosing of winners.
