The Weekly Standard's website is advertising that the magazine has mysteriously received a draft of a part of Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels' response to the State of the Union.

Towards the end of the speech, a startling few paragraphs stand out:

The candidates for the Republican nomination are my friends. I like and admire them. But I must say I’ve increasingly come to share the doubt that any of them would be likely to win, or would be likely to govern successfully.

So I want to announce tonight that I am open to reconsidering my decision not to seek the presidency in 2012. I have not wanted to run, for family reasons among others. I have hoped someone else would prove up to the task. But my family and I have now decided that country must come first. I am considering joining the race.

If there is any truth, whatsoever, in this story, then it will mark the first time in the 2012 race that I am genuinely excited about the race:

inline

If I run, I will be a reluctant candidate, in the sense that I did not plan on seeking this position. But let me assure you of this: if I do run, I will not run a reluctant campaign. I will run full out. I will compete in those primaries where I can still get on the ballot, I will go all out to win at the convention where the nomination will likely be decided, and I will take the fight to President Obama in the fall. If I run, I will run to win—because this country deserves leadership that will fundamentally remodel our government and restore our nation.

I only pray that this is not a hoax or some blogger's idea of a joke.

Ahhh, Bill Kristol wrote it.  Makes sense. He has finally gone off the deep end.

Why didn't he pick Jeb to taunt us ?

This seems like a cruel, cruel hoax.  And if Bill Kristol really did fabricate this all himself, I'm going to be cross with him for a very long while.

I think this is only half in jest.

If you read the entire text on the Standard's website, "Daniels" calls for his supporters to send him an email if they want him to run.  I imagine Bill Kristol hopes that may actually happen.

It was pretty obviously written by Kristol, and he is hoping that it generates some action to liven things up.

I wonder why he picked Daniels?  Maybe because he's already bombed on his Ryan draft, Christie is too committed to Romney, and Jeb is named Bush.

Note that he isn't promoting Newt.  Dr. Kristol may be a dreamer, but he isn't insane.

Yeah like those insane economists Thomas Sowell and Arthur Laffer.

It is quite amusing when folks attack others of using "language of the left" and then go on to insinuate that people who disagree with their point of view are crazy.

Since about last summer, Kristol/TWS have periodically posted notes from a certain "Dark Lady" who has been pushing for Ryan, Christie, Daniels, et al. to get into the race.  At first I thought there genuinely was some lady, but it's almost certainly just Kristol, still valiantly beating the "for God's sake, someone else!" horse.  You have to tip your hat to him for his persistence.  I think Daniels' giving the response to Obama's SOTU speech is the occasion for Kristol's choice of the Indiana governor here.  Can't say I wouldn't be elated if this came true...but it won't.

For the record, I am not the dark lady to whom Bill Kristol refers.

Clearly a joke . . . and yet, perhaps more than a joke?

(Oh, and Paul Rahe: which Dark Lady are you, then?)

Professor:  You may not be the dark lady in this case, but have you been a dark lady in other plots?

So, who did he think was running a month ago? Why were they okay then, but not now?

I recall an occasion when Michael Barone somewhat surreptitiously handed Paul Ryan a post of Prof. Rahe's exhorting Ryan to run.  I don't know, sounds suspicious.  Perhaps there is a cabal of "dark ladies."

I might be the dark lady who set this all in motion this morning. I can neither confirm nor deny.

Yep, a certain Member here has, over the past few days, baldly branded several people who disagree with him as sufferers from psychological disorders.

I don't think people who disagree with me are crazy.  They're entitled to their opinions.  If I'm not capable of making a reasoned counter-argument, it simply diminishes me to call them crazy.

This is getting Clintonian.
