Especially when I read stuff like this. And see pictures like this:

My inner cynic wants to say, Oh, come on. All politicians are alike. That guy spent too much money and in the end, there weren't any weapons of mass destruction.

But there's a real decency to him. A genuineness. He really likes shaking that soldier's hand. That handshake means something important to both of them. And yes, I do miss that.

I miss him, too. He has a great sense of humor and such a healthy unconcern for what others thought of him.

And, a comparison:

Two presidents visit U.S. troops: The styles of Barack Obama and George W. Bush in photos (Andrew Malcolm, 3/30/10)

Decency is just the right word. Despite the reprehensible way he was personally attacked for most of his terms, I can't recall his ever responding in kind. Classy move to greet the troops at DFW.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I'll stick to my prediction when he left office that over time history would be kind to him, especially if Iraq stabilizes into something resembling a functioning democracy.

There was not an ounce of pretension about him. He is, in short, authentic, in the best sense of the term.

Nice link. I'm surprised the LAT went with the juxtaposition.

I have always seen Bush as a strong Christian man who really cares about others. Can you imagine Obama having "I'm a loving man but I have a job to do" moment about anything?

He looks like a saint now by comparison to The Alien in the Black Ops House. But if he'd done a better job of DEFENDING HIMSELF (thanks a lot Karl Rove!) The Alien wouldn't be there. Our only consolation depends on the existence of an over-arching Destiny, or Fate, or Providence - take your pick. If they exist, we may hope that it's all for the best. in the long run. If not, well....

Should be titled: President Obama curing the troops of scrofula.

Are we sure there were no WMD in Iraq? Were they not shipped to Syria, e.g.?

The honor of a man is marked in part by how he honors others. The contrast could not be clearer. One seeks to honor, while the other just seeks honor.

Do I miss the man who seeks to honor others? You bet I do.

I do miss him and the sense of dignity he brought to the Oval Office.

On the WMD issue, did you catch the story about the Yellowcake Uranium being sold to Canada and transported out of Iraq? Http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25546334/ Yes, MSNBC, proof of the adage that even a blind squirrel sometimes finds a nut.

So, all of these characteristics- genuineness, a great sense of humor, a healthy unconcern for what others thought of him, decency, really cares about others, demonstrated honor and a sense of dignity - perhaps are part of the reason for the intense hatred shown towards him? It seems that a significant number of our (vocal, anyway) populace truly hate those values which are of time-honored intrinsic value.
Pictures of President and Mrs. Bush and the troops, and the regard held between them, are always a breath of fresh air.

I have had mixed feelings about W, especially on his domestic policies. But anyone who doubts his love for this country or his deep concern for our troops has missed the measure of the man. I am certain that his decisions to deploy troops into combat were gut-wrenching for him (because of his love for the troops and not so much the political implications). Obama's decision re: Afghanistan appears to lack the passion for the cause or concern for the troops, but is animated primarily by the political calulations.

Obama simply doesn't think America is exceptional, W does.

When I saw this, my first reaction was "Now that is how an ex-President ought to behave." I agree with some of the others that Mr. Bush had some political priorities with which I would disagree, but this picture tells you all you need to know about the man's character.

Y'all remember this?

I cannot imagine Barry ever doing that.

And I bet those girls didn't have a health license to sell either... not even to the President.

I don't understand why everyone's agreed there were no WMD. I know a guy that actually held one in his hand. He said they were the size of a shoebox. But who ever asks the folks that were over there?
