Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
Earlier today National Review Online posted an editorial entitled, "Don't Panic." An excerpt:
Republicans, especially in the pundit and strategist class, need to take a deep breath. Yes, Mitt Romney has been behind in most of the polls, both in the nation as a whole and in swing states. Yes, there is some evidence that the brutal and unscrupulous ad campaign by the Democrats is hurting his numbers....
[But t]he race remains tight, and Obama is below 50 percent both nationally and in the swing states. Romney is running a competent campaign that raises funds effectively, develops its messages and mostly stays on them, and can be trusted to execute its strategies well.
To which Mike Murphy has just tweeted this reply:
Nah. Panic just a little bit.
Mitt still can win though.

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
Well, it seems like from your earlier post today that you agree with the "panic a little" position and maybe disagree with the "can still win though" side.
I don't mean to put words in your mouth, but I do listen to the podcasts and read your posts, and I'm making, in my mind, a logical assumption.

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
Panic on August 10th? Three months early?? Before the conventions, before the VP pick, before most of the rest of the country is even paying attention?!
Um, I'm not panicking about Romney. I'm panicking about the GOP braintrust...and I use that term loosely.

A little panic - not all-out-Godzilla-is-here!!-stumble-over-one-another-panic is what I believe Mr. Murphy is recommending. A little panic is a good thing and helps everyone in our ranks not to get complacent if it appears we have a little edge in the polls.
In the run-up to the election, anything can and will happen that could change the course of the election for Romney in a negative way and a little panic is sure to be with us until or as the numbers start coming in on November 6th. The panic gets littler as the polling margin widens...but it never goes away.
And yes, as for the cricket-playing establishment Republicans who don't quite get it that were not playing cricket...be afraid...be very afraid.

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
If panic you must, channel the panic-energy into working on getting Romney elected with majorities in the House and Senate instead of writing hand-wringing think pieces.

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
Constructive panic, as in "I gotta work harder to get Obama out of office."
Not destructive panic, as in, "Oh, my God, we're going to lose, I'd better pack for Canada."

This election is Capitalism vs. Communism, it's really out of our hands. Has the Left created enough dependent morons? I don't think so, but we'll see...

Don't panic. That is, unless you've forgotten your towel. Then, well, by all means PANIC!!!

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
I was wondering if someone was gonna bring that one up.
By the way, this is the towel you should have.

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
Once I forgot my towel and almost panicked but then I picked up a spiffy new one in the spaceport on my way to Dangrabad Beta. Horrible place. Lots of sand.

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
The column is bang on. Its too early for all-out panic, but the Romney campaign does need to make some adjustments. We're still far enough out from election day that this thing can turn around.

My advice:
1. Stay on the attack. Attack in as many different directions as possible, as not every attack will be successful.
2. Whatever John McCain did -- do the opposite.

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
Murphy is entertaining and all -- but he's the guy who for a year told us Meg Whitman could win, and then after she lost he said, She could never have won. He's an operative.

What Mike Murphy is saying is that it's time to start writing those checks so that the campaign can spend more money on commercials...commercials made by campaign operatives like Mike Murphy!

Re: Mike Murphy to the Editors of National Review
Obama has money to spend on negative ads and they are proving effective - after all, that's why political campaigns invest their campaign money in them.
Romney has to wait until he gets the nomination when the presidential campaign money becomes available. Then he can ramp up his ads.
If he is still behind in late September, then it'll be time to join the rats in the lifeboats.
