Midnight in Rome
From the National Catholic Register:
“Again and again,” the Pope said at midnight mass], “it astonishes us that God makes himself a child so that we may love him. [It] is as if God were saying: I know that my glory frightens you, and that you are trying to assert yourself in the face of my grandeur. So now I am coming to you as a child, so that you can accept me and love me.”
To everyone here at Ricochet, Merry Christmas.

Re: Midnight in Rome
Some relate to Jesus as a brotherly companion. I have always known Him foremost as my just and gracious King. Thus, to imagine my King as a small and helpless babe is like trying to imagine a star pulsing brightly from my back yard... like the height of glory in a cardboard box.
To the think that my Creator once cried and ate and pooped and slept like any human being!
Happy Birthday, little King!

Re: Midnight in Rome
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Don't believe in miracles? The site didn't keel over after Pseudo's thousandth "The End of Ricochet" comment.

Re: Midnight in Rome
Recently Pope Benedict began twittering (@Pontifex). Sample:
If, like mine, your twitter feed runs the gamut from ephemeral political commentary to snarky drivel (with the two being sometimes indistinguishable) you might want to add the Holy Father. Every day or so a welcome reminder that there's a larger purpose than the topic of the hour.
With that, a blessed Christmas and joyous New Year to you and yours.

Re: Midnight in Rome
Merry Christmas, Peter. Benedict is one of the great Christian thinkers of modern times, no doubt about it. His exegesis of the temptations of Jesus in the desert was just about breathtaking. Here he does it again.

Re: Midnight in Rome
I'm always happy when my thinking is in sync with PBXVI. It feels like I've tuned into the right channel.
This is one of those times. I've been contemplating how great hope, salvation even(!), can be embodied in something so small and helpless as a newborn babe. That's something, or I should say, Someone, to carry us through these times of grieving for the country. Keep looking out for the small, exceptionally hopeful signs -- for God with us.
Merry Christmas everyone!
