Mickey Navy

Chalk up another victory for America's well concealed and now well vaunted heroes in Seal Team.   They are having a great year.  First they surgically sharp shoot some pirates off the planet.  Then they kill bin Laden.

Now they beat Mickey Mouse without firing a single shot, though I can't say for sure that there was no waterboarding involved.

posted here about Disney filing 3 applications to own the trademark "Seal Team 6" just days after Seal Team took out bin Laden.

Yesterday I posted that the Navy joined the fight for the name by filing their own trademark application.

Well today it is being reported that Mickey Mouse has withdrawn his application, leaving no current challengers to the Navy for ownership of the name.

Notice how Fox News ends their report with the non-sequitur that Mickey Mouse white flagged "just hours after Fox reported about it."

Back off Roger.  You know it was fear of a backlash from Ricochet comments that Disney was worried about.

Best news I've heard so far today! I was pretty disgusted (though not necessarily surprised) that Disney moved to trademark the name. I mean, really: How tacky was that?

No one should be surprised that the corporation behind the extension of copyright beyond its constitutional purpose to a term of now well over one hundred years is also adept at also grabbing as much intellectual property as possible; most of their profits are derived from this rent seeking activity, so it is only natural that they play by the rules of the game that they've created.

Copyright today is a net drag on the economy, both in financial terms and in less quantifiable artistic terms (would Shakespeare have been as great if he hadn't ripped off so many sources for his inspiration?).  I'm not hopeful, but it should be fundamentally reformed and set back to the terms available at the Founding.

Or at least back to right after the Webster's had their way with it.
