Michelle in Hell
Pretty hard not to bury one's face in one's hands, or even someone else's hands, after reading that Michelle Obama told French first lady Carla Bruni that being America's first lady was "hell. I can't stand it." Watsamatta, Michelle, didn't I send you a large enough allowance for your trip to Spain? But, in truth, I always have a little added compassion for First Ladies - who didn't run for anything, after all, and aren't really answerable to the public in the same way their husbands are. In Mrs. Obama's case, sure, you can compare her to Marie Antoinette, but you have to remember: Marie Antoinette's biggest sin was being married to Louis XVI - the guy who got caught holding the ancien regime potato when time ran out. Michelle is in a similar position: she gets to the top of the leftist heap just as leftism is crumbling. Nobody explained to her that her alleged rock star husband is really an incompetent know-nothing and that everything she was taught to believe is untrue. And now she has to find out in front of everybody. That is hell, actually.

Re: Michelle in Hell
I wish that was the lesson our First Lady would take from her recent experience, but I doubt it. More likely, "It's Bush's fault."

Re: Michelle in Hell
America's a mean country, man. A mean and chubby country, with septic tanks in its gardens. Alas, while Barack has changed our souls, it was in the wrong direction. So the time in her adult life that she was proud of America was but a fleeting idyll.
Hey, kids! Guess what time it is! Vacation!

Anybody want to be in the same room next time Michelle and Carla meet? Bring an overcoat... it might be a wee bit chilly.

Re: Michelle in Hell
Love the analogy, Andrew. It sucks indeed when the clock strikes midnight in a fairytale and everything begins to turn to pumpkins. VDH's often referred to Nemesis finally finding a perch above the White House, and she is ravenous.

You mean she is no longer proud of America? Well, I am shocked.

Oh, that happened long ago. Here is one of my favorite Michelle Obama photo's. She looks like she wants to strangle Carla Bruni:

So, more or less like the first time they met.

Re: Michelle in Hell
Sheer brilliance, Klavan, one of the funniest things I've read this year. Michelle and Carla do make a pair, don't they? Poor Carla had to do 32 takes on a movie scene without dialogue! (she kept looking at the camera) and poor Michelle stands on the balconey as the peasants storm the castle. Brilliant!

Re: Michelle in Hell
You're totally right on, Andrew. I could feel sorry for the woman if she weren't such a potent destroyer of liberties, and such a factor in Obama's success.

Translation: "I thought it would be easy for me - the Queen of Darkness - and my assistant - the Prince of Darkness - to dismantle the traditions, customs, history, and laws of America; and transform it into an arm of the international Statist-collective. The people resisting us are making our lives very difficult, and it's extremely annoying!"

Re: Michelle in Hell
I think the Obamas have concluded that America doesn't deserve them. They display an odd combination of victimhood and entitlement, which two reinforce each other and render them impervious to the education that life offers others.
Michelle doesn't think it's hell being first lady because her husband is a terrible leader, whose administration is deeply at odds with the values and aspirations of the American people. She thinks it's hell having to make nice to a nation of such ungrateful boobs. Who can blame her? She has exchanged her phony overpaid diversity job and her Hyde Park echo chamber for a high profile role in which she actually might hear disconfirming voices, or -- even worse -- have her triceps compared to Carla Bruni's.
Or maybe deep down she really loves it, and was just posturing.

Re: Michelle in Hell
It's so taxing to be ascending the stairs to Air Force One all the time.
Perhaps we should provide her Ladyship with a palanquin and four bearers in powdered wigs and knee breaches to relieve her of that burden.

Re: Michelle in Hell
I have always felt a little sorry for First Ladies. Few relish the position like Eleanor Roosevelt or Hillary Clinton.
You're in a position where the man you love is absolutely vilified by a large portion of the electorate. Everything you do is under the microscope and can suddenly be viewed as a political liability. Forget trips to Spain, try changing the White House china or talk to an astrologer!
There was always a look in Pat Nixon's eyes that broke my heart.

Come on, you guys, this is the Jacqueline K. or our generation here! The style, the elegance! You should be ashamed of yourselves. And lose some weight and stop eating salt for goodness sakes - for the kids.

Is it really any wonder? The French First Lady is beautiful, feminine, exquisitely comfortable on the world stage, has superb taste in clothes, and everything she does, she does with style. Michelle Obama looks like a linebacker, has the diplomatic skills of a dock worker, and the dress sense of a housekeeper-- (did everyone see the pictures of her with the Spanish royals? Good God!) She may be married to the president, but she's clearly and hopelessly out of her element and will never be a lady of any kind.
(Has there ever been a president's wife more appallingly unprepared and unsuited for her role, or more desperately in need of her own Letitia Baldrige?)
One can only pray that her "hell"-- and the national embarrassment to which she subjects us every time she opens her mouth-- ends as quickly as a compassionate heaven will allow.

OK that's ad hominem and uncivil... but hilarious. My third nomination for Quote of the Week and it's only Thursday.

Re: Michelle in Hell
Given the insanity of the life inflicted on the first family, one has to be wary of any first lady who says they love it. A quiet toleration is perhaps the best one could expect from a sane and well-centered spouse.
