Michael Barone Handed Paul Ryan a Paper Copy of Paul Rahe's "A Duty to Serve" Post

From the Washington Examiner (H/T Instapundit):
After the speech and colloquy I handed Ryan a paper copy of Rahe’s post and urged him to read it. He said he would. My guess is that Paul Ryan is giving serious consideration to running for president, and that something like Paul Rahe’s call to duty rather than any crass political calculation is likely to persuade him to do so.
I'm probably getting way ahead of myself here...but I can't help but think, is this how history is made?

We can only hope. I have mixed feelings about pressuring someone to run for office by framing it as their civic obligation, particularly when concern for their family might be the primary obstacle to doing so. If Paul Ryan has a fraction of the personal integrity that I suspect he does, the appeal to duty will probably have more of an effect on him than it would on most politicians. I can see it being a major factor in his deliberations. This is a good thing.

Against a war-time draft, too?

No, no problem with a war-time draft. Since this ideological war over the economy is a fight for the Country's survival, I'm afraid I'm in favor of conscripting Ryan as the Republican candidate also. Of course it's not fair to him. I'm being selfish here and thinking about the future of my kids.

Stealing a march from Felicia B, this is a great big LIKE for this post.

Wow!!! This is most exciting news. I'm glad Paul Ryan had a chance to lay eyes on Professor Rahe's exhortation to run. Let's hope he found it as persuasive as I did.

As one of the dissenters in that thread, I feel I have to say: I would gladly support Ryan for President. I only wonder if he could better lead from the White House than from his current position in Congress. We need him to convince voters that change is needed, rather than to sign bills which others could sign.
Whether America renews itself or embraces ruin, that choice should belong to voters, not to politicians. Ryan is already preparing voters for that choice. Can he adequately inform enough voters without running for President?
If he runs, the Left will not allow him to focus exclusively on his Roadmap to fiscal sanity. They will try to distract him with lesser issues. They will try to malign his character with insinuations and wild accusations.
Ryan must lead the public conversation. Can he do that better as a Presidential candidate?
If another Republican is elected in 2012, could that President not defer to Ryan for fiscal leadership? Are none of the current candidates humble enough to share the spotlight?

Recall how much media attention Palin received as a candidate for Vice President in 2008. Would Ryan receive as much attention as a VP candidate?

Aaron, no one can generate the media attention that Sarah can. It's contrary to natural law or something. I guess it's her universe, we just get to live in it.
