Mia Love: Misses Fundraiser With Paul Ryan to Do Her Job
Mia Love is running against incumbent Blue Dog Jim Matheson in Utah's new Fourth District. Love is a black conservative Mormon woman. And she's the real deal.
As reported by a local paper, Love was unable to attend the fundraiser headlined by Paul Ryan, and attended by John McCain, Karl Rove, Condi Rice, and Jeb Bush. Why? She's the Mayor of Saratoga Springs. There's a wildfire threatening her city which has required the evacuation of scores of residents. So instead of going to the fundraiser, which was very successful, she was actually doing the job she'd been elected to do.
Sounds like the kind of conservative we can use in Congress.

She's a child of grateful immigrants. I wish that didn't explain it, but THAT explains a lot, doesn't it?

I would have thought even better of her if she had missed that fundraiser - because she had to wash her hair...

It does. Her mother refused to take public assistance. That says quite a bit.

Everything I've seen of her is mighty impressive. I asked on the member call in a couple of weeks ago if we're seeing a groundswell of conservatism at the state level that will make its way into national politics, and she is a perfect example of that happening. The thought of her and West in the Congressional Black Caucus meetings makes me smile.

She's very nice, but can mix it up when necessary--I'm not talking Allen West type mixing it up, but she's very clear about what she believes. One of Romney's sons has done a lot to help her.

King Prawn I think you are on to something (not surprising). For all the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the lack of conservatives in Congress, especially the Senate, and running for POTUS, there seems to be an equal push for conservative leadership making its way up from the local and state levels.
It is frustrating that at a national level that this movement is largely ignored, but isn't too shocking. Those at the national level that are most threatened by this movement aren't hardcore progressives, but rather those that have previously proposed to believe in constitutionally limited government, but have a voting record that says otherwise.

Have the usual suspects already started calling her "inauthentic" or via some other expression tried to delegitimize her as a credible African American politician? Oh my but they hate it when one gets off the Democrat plantation!

As noted by Franco above, it was good that she missed the meet-up. These people ALL think government is the way to fix things. They are all "celebrities" and that's why the fundraiser was "successful" but you wouldn't really want them advising you.

Re: Mia Love: Misses Fundraiser With Paul Ryan to Do Her Job
In the State Republican Convention, our current (and retiring) AG was supporting a different candidate, a legislator. During his speech on behalf of his guy, the AG said something like "we need experience, not a novelty." He was loudly booed and Love beat his guy by enough that she avoided a primary.
If the Dems are smart, they'll stay away from the "inauthentic" tag. You only have to be around Love for three minutes to know she's completely authentic.

Come on. It was a fundraiser. The star was Paul Ryan (I assume he's OK). Rove grew up in SLC, McCain was our last presidential candidate, Rice is a former Secretary of State (and a black woman), and Bush is a former governor. I wouldn't support any of them for president, but if we ban them to some kind of outer darkness because they aren't as conservative as we are, we'll be able to hold our conventions at a Denny's.
She's a real conservative, and, were I her, I'd have had all of them there too. She is facing a very tough five-term incumbent.

But ... but ... tabula, you know Mormons are racists and misogynists, even more than standard monogamous conservatives. C'mon, tell us to which harem she belongs?
(obvious, but to be certain, j/k)

The district she's running in is less than one percent black. But, of course, all us white racists will elect her in an ironic, condescending manner. We're so hateful we allow the objects of our hate to represent us in Congress.

You gotta love Mia. Seeing folks like her staking their claims in national politics gives me hope for a change.

Tabula, I was distressed to see that a recent poll has Matheson leading Love 53-38. Is that just because of name recognition? I thought Matheson's district was realigned to make it more Republican?

That made me chuckle.

Re my comment on the Rob Long post about Kenneth that got 96 comments so far, this gets promoted to the main feed. Congrats Tabla, you seem to have cracked the code on getting your posts promoted.
Mia Love whoop-de-do. I can't vote for her, although I would. She's in a congressional race 2,200 miles away. She's black and Mormon and conservative. Great. She didn't go to a fundraiser because she was needed elsewhere. Fantastic! Got it. Read about her here before, from Tabla Rasa I think.
