Friends: You can stop sending me this news, I know!

What the world may not yet know is that Ricochet reader Jonathan Gilbert is working on Iron Lady, the opera. He just sent me the first act. I love it. Jonathan, have you joined Ricochet yet? I know you're reading this. If you join, we can all discuss some of my favorite parts.

Giving Meryl Streep the role worries me. It''s not that she's incapable of doing it accurately and projecting the right spirit. She can project nearly anything she wants. Does she want to do it the right way? Will it end up being just a meaner version of Sister Aloysius Beauvier?

I really, really, REALLY expected that Emma Thompson would eventually play Lady Maggie.

Ideally, it'll be a soberer version of Julia Child.

At one point Oliver Stone had been developing a project with Glenn Close in mind, and I feel she's a bit closer than Meryl, who undoubtedly IS capable but...I also question her intentions a bit. However, after "Mamma Mia," I'm far more concerned about Phyllida Lloyd's ability to handle this as a director...

"Iron Lady" could do well if the masses connect it to "Iron Man". Meryl Streep in a battle suit shooting repulsor rays! I'm in!

Claire, are you serious? Jonathan, is she? Because I love the idea of an opera based on Lady Thatcher. Zowie. Can't come too soon.

Claire Berlinski

I'm serious.

She's quite serious, and it's entirely her fault. It was all I could think about for two weeks after reading her book and now my entire life has been consumed. We're still very early in the process but by the end of the year hope to have something worthy of a reading at least, so if you should find yourself in New York, I'd love for you to see it. Strangely, the composer and I were discussing what we consider the best presidential speeches we've encountered in our lifetime a few days ago and your work was something we agreed upon instantly, so I'm delighted (and terrified) that you're be on-board with the opera idea.
